Marina Abramović – solo exhibition at Galleri F 15

MARINA ABRAMOVIĆ

Galleri F 15, Albyalléen 60, Moss, Norway
25 October 2025 – 1 February 2026

Vernissage Tuesday 28 October, 17:00.
Curated by Lise Pennington and Maria C. Havstam, in collaboration with Abramović.

Galleri F 15’s solo exhibition with Marina Abramović will showcase a wide-ranging selection of works spanning five decades of her groundbreaking practice, including performance, video, photography, and installation.

Serbian artist Marina Abramović is widely regarded as a pioneer of performance art as a visual art form. She has consistently redefined the boundaries of contemporary art through her fearless engagement with pain, endurance, vulnerability, and transformation.

«The exhibition brings together key works from various phases of Abramović’s career and revolves around themes such as endurance, nature, energy, and mortality», says Lise Pennington, Director of Galleri F 15 and one of the exhibition’s curators.

The exhibition unfolds across seven thematic chapters:

Early video performances and collaborations with the artist Ulay—Art Must Be Beautiful, Artist Must Be Beautiful, Rest Energy, Imponderabilia, and The Hero—highlight the physical and psychological tension central to Abramović’s practice. The works in the section «Physical and Mental Borders» confront the viewer with raw vulnerability and the delicate balance between danger and intimacy.

Following her landmark performance The Artist is Present at MoMA in 2010, where she engaged in silent eye contact with over 1600 visitors across three months, Abramović turned to nature for grounding. Holding the Goat, Holding the Lamb, Black Sheep, and Portrait with Black Lamb in «Back to Simplicity» reflect a return to elemental simplicity and a desire for reconnection with the natural world.

The Cleaner, Portrait with Potatoes, Portrait with Onions, The Kitchen II, and The Kitchen VII are presented in «Domestic Life», where everyday chores such as cleaning and cooking are elevated to symbolic and meditative gestures.

«Places of Power» shows Abramović’s deep connection to Brazil, where she has studied crystals and their effects on the body and mind. Her investigation of spirituality and the power of energy from nature is reflected in the works The Current and Floating. Building on these themes in «Meditative States», Water Study and Black Dragon evoke states of reflection and meditative practices, encouraging the viewer to participate.

The exploration of the energetic potential of materials continues in «Transforming Energy». The works Dozing Consciousness (Body) and Shoes for Departure open for participation through interaction with minerals and crystals, including stepping into a pair of shoes made from quartz crystals.

In «Death» the theme of mortality is addressed through the works Nude with Skeleton, Holding the Skeleton, Portrait with Matches, and The Kitchen VIII. In different periods of Abramović life, she has made several works using skeleton, symbolising the weight and inevitability of death, as well as the burden of mortality.

The exhibition offers an opportunity to experience the breadth of Marina Abramović’s artistic journey—from physically demanding performances to poetic reflections on nature, energy, and mortality. It invites visitors to engage deeply with the artist’s exploration of human limits, spiritual transformation, and the power of presence.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Marina Abramović (b. 1946, Belgrade, Yugoslavia) is a pioneering figure in performance art. Since the 1970s, she has explored the limits of body and mind through works involving pain, endurance, and spiritual transformation. Her collaboration with German artist Ulay produced some of the most iconic performances of the 1970s and 1980s, including Imponderabilia.

In 2010, her landmark retrospective The Artist is Present at MoMA in New York became a cultural phenomenon, cementing her status as a leading contemporary artist. Throughout her career, Abramović has continued to push the boundaries of what is considered art. In 2013 she founded the Marina Abramović Institute to support long durational performance art.

Abramović has presented her work in solo exhibitions and international exhibitions, including the Venice Biennale and Documenta in Kassel, as well as Moderna Museet in Stockholm, and the Royal Academy of Arts in London, where she became the first female artist to hold a solo exhibition in the Main Galleries in 2023.

Her practice remains deeply influential, blending ritual, presence, and physicality to explore what it means to be human.
