Graphene Flagship partner Graphmatech raises €8.4 million investment

Graphene Flagship partner Graphmatech, in Sweden, uses graphene-based materials to drive the transition to a more sustainable world. Demand for more efficient and durable raw materials is soaring, and often the forecasted demand far outstrips the supply. With this new €8.4 million investment, Graphmatech will reinforce its position as a leading supplier of graphene-enabled alternative materials.

"We are very pleased to see such a broad range of investors acknowledging the value of our graphene materials technology, and that both new and previous investors support our sustainability vision,” says Mamoun Taher, CEO and founder of Graphene Flagship partner Graphmatech. “Thanks to their support, Graphmatech can continue to scale up the production capacity, launch products and increase our technological edge.”

Molindo Energy, Forward Ventures and SEB Venture Debt are new investors, while existing investors, ABB Technology Ventures, Almi Invest GreenTech, Walerud Ventures and KIC Innoenergy, continue to invest in Graphmatech. Molindo Energy led the round together with returning lead ABB Technology Ventures. Morgan Sadarangani will join the board from Molindo Energy.

“Graphmatech will be a key player in the energy transition,” says Morgan Sadarangani, CEO and founder of Molindo Energy.

“The drive behind Graphmatech’s technology is to turbocharge the transition to a sustainable society, and Almi Green Tech is honored to support the strong Graphmatech team on this journey, says Boris Gyllhamn, Investment Manager at Almi Invest GreenTech AB.

“By making possible to leverage the properties of graphene on an industrial scale, Graphmatech’s technology offers tremendous potential to enable the sustainable electrification of industry, additive manufacturing and the next generation of energy storage. For ABB Technology Ventures, it is a privilege working with such a talented team lead by Mamoun and to contribute to the next phase of Graphmatech’s growth journey,” says Kurt Kaltenegger, Head of ABB Technology Ventures.

“Our partner Graphmatech develops new sustainable solutions and technologies. Investors show increasing interest in graphene, which further strengthens the Graphene Flagship’s leading position in pioneering innovation in the 2D revolution. We have brought graphene-based products to the market, and there is a bright future for graphene-based technologies. The recent development also signals Europe’s leadership in the field,” concludes Kari Hjelt, Graphene Flagship Head of Innovation.

About the Graphene Flagship

The Graphene Flagship is research, innovation and collaboration.

Funded by the European Commission, the Graphene Flagship aims to secure a major role for Europe in the ongoing technological revolution, helping to bring graphene innovation out of the lab and into commercial applications. The Graphene Flagship gathers nearly 170 academic and industrial partners from 22 countries, all exploring different aspects of graphene and related materials. Bringing diverse competencies together, the Graphene Flagship facilitates cooperation between its partners, accelerating the timeline for industry acceptance of graphene technologies. The European Commission’s FET Flagships enable research projects on an unprecedented scale. With €1 billion budgets, the Graphene Flagship, Human Brain Project and Quantum Flagship serve as technology accelerators, helping Europe to compete with other global markets in research and innovation. With an additional €20 million investment, the European Commission has now funded the creation of an experimental pilot line for graphene-based electronics, optoelectronics and sensors.
