7 advantages of choosing CIGS solar panels for bus transport

Learn more about the advantages of choosing CIGS panels for achieving effective and sustainable bus transport. We have compiled 7 advantages here

Effcientiency and performance

CIGS (copper, indium, gallium and selenide) solar panels are known for their high efficiency and reliability, especially during varying light conditions. These panels have one of the highest efficiency levels amongst solar cell technologies. This ensures the maximal exploitation of solar energy for power production. Whether the buses drive in areas with shade, city streets, or road stretches with varying levels of sunlight, the CIGS solar panels maintain their stable performance and ensure a continuous and reliable power supply.

Lightweight and flexibility

Lightweight solar cells are thinner and more flexible than traditional types of solar cells. This makes them easy to install on the roofs and surfaces of buses. They are only 3 mm thick and weigh 2.2 kg per sq.m, which not only makes them ideal for energy-effective transport but also makes it possible to adjust the panels for various types and sizes of vehicles without adding additional weight.

Optimised space utilisation

CIGS panels have a high energy density. This means more power on smaller surfaces, which is ideal for buses with a limited roof size. They can be glued on without drill holes and adjusted to the surface, which makes it possible to install them more or less everywhere on the bus.

Durability and reliability

CIGS panels are known for their impressive durability and reliability over time. Their construction and materials are specially developed to resist external influences and maintain their functionality for many years. This is of significant importance for bus transport companies wanting to invest in an energy solution that can support a reliable power supply during the entire lifespan of the solar panel. By choosing CIGS panels, the operators can trust that their investment will continue to deliver effective energy even after many years of use in demanding transport environments.

No micro-cracks or fire hazard

CIGS panels are constructed with a particular flexibility that makes them more resistant to micro-cracks compared to other solar cell technologies. Micro-cracks usually develop over time because of repeated impact, temperature fluctuations and vibrations that can be common during bus transport. Luckily, CIGS panels minimise this risk. So their power supply won’t be negatively affected by small cracks. Furthermore, CIGS panels have a significantly lower fire hazard than alternative panel types, further improving the panels’ safety and durability. This is especially relevant for bus transport companies where safety is the utmost priority for passengers and vehicles.

Sustainable solution

CIGS panels are produced with materials with a low environmental impact without toxic materials like cadmium, which is usually present in other solar panels. The CIGS technology uses existing materials – copper from scrap cable, indium and gallium extracted from electronics such as TVs and mobiles, and selenide refined from quartz sand. This entails minimal raw material consumption and recyclable products to sustain circularity.

Minimal loss of performance at high temperatures

CIGS solar panels have the advantage that they’re designed for both cold and extremely hot environments with a risk of fire hazard, damage or reduced performance. They maintain effectiveness at both low and high temperatures as buses are often exposed to changing weather conditions when driving. It provides a sense of security for bus operators to know that the panels can maintain a reliable power supply no matter the weather.
