Havila Voyages announce quarterly results

Havila Voyages (Havila Kystruten AS) published its quarterly results for the third quarter for 2022 today.

The results show that the shipping company had a profit of minus NOK 109 million before tax. The income in the period was NOK 134 million, of which NOK 34 million was contract income, and an operating profit before depreciation of minus NOK 15 million.

“We have put the first quarter of a year behind us with two ships in full operation along the Norwegian coast. The period has been characterized by cancellations from several tour operators because of delayed delivery of Havila Castor and the fact that Havila Capella was sanctioned and out of operation for almost 3 months. We also can’t underestimate the general uncertainty in the world”, says CEO Bent Martini.

“At the same time, we have received very positive feedback from those who travel with us both in terms of our product and our concept on board, and we have great confidence that we will succeed with this project. So far, we have good booking numbers for 2023, which accounts for about half of expected orders for next year and we look forward to a more stable period when we have all four ships in full operation”.

Havila Voyages’ ships are the most environmentally friendly that operate the nearly 130-year-old coastal route between Bergen and Kirkenes, and the ships use a hybrid solution between liquefied natural gas (LNG) and the world's largest battery pack on a passenger ship for propulsion.

“The price of LNG has been much higher than expected and calculated when the agreement with the Ministry of Transport was signed. It affects our numbers. At the same time, we are in a build-up phase where we have salary and operating costs linked to the training of our crew before all ships are in operation”, says Martini.

“Now we look forward to getting Havila Polaris home to Norway before the new year, and Havila Pollux will arrive during the first quarter of 2023. We remain very positive about our future and are sure we will deliver positive figures”, he concludes.

The Havila Voyages is a Norwegian shipping company that sails the classic coastal voyage between Bergen and Kirkenes with the Norwegian coast's most environmentally friendly ships.

The four new ships are loaded with the world's largest battery pack, and can sail for four hours without noise or emissions through vulnerable fjords. The batteries are charged with clean hydropower at shore, and when the batteries are low we switch to natural gas which cuts CO2 by around 25 %.

The hull is specially designed for maximum energy efficiency, and excess heat from cooling water and sea used for heating on board. On the menu are locally made dishes from local producers, and all unnecessary plastic is avoided. We are already exceeding the authorities' requirements for cutting emission, and we have set sail with zero emissions as the future target.

The Havila Voyages is part of the Havila Group that dates back to the 1950s. It all started when the founder, Per Sævik, bought his first fishing boat in his teens. From fishing and herring fishing, Havila is now a group operating in shipping technology, offshore, transport and tourism.

Experience the Norwegian coast with the most environmentally friendly cruise company

In December 2021 Havila Voyages started sailing the most environmentally friendly ships on the Norwegian coast between Bergen and Kirkenes. We sail through narrow fjords and on the high seas, past steep mountains and weathered islets, under the Northern Lights and the midnight sun.
