There are not so many roof top bars in Kuta which seems a shame because this bustling town actually looks much better from up high, and as we emerge into sunlight at the top of 1O1, we are greeted with panoramic views stretching to the shimmering sea. The ROOFTOP Dine & Music Lounge draws a young, up for it crowd, and the fortnightly ‘Urban Sunset Breeze’ sky pool party’ is under way. A dj booth is set up by the pool, and the music is pumping. People keep cool in the water, or lounge around on shady deck chairs, while waiters serve colourful happy hour cocktails, and a Jimbaran style barbecue is offered – all you can eat for RP 150,000.00.

If pool parties aren’t really your thing you can enjoy the views from the upper terrace where waitresses are sheathed in golden toga-style dresses, and daily happy hour extends from 6pm – 8pm, with special deals on selected cocktails. Talented bar manager Agung Udiana, brings passion to everything he creates, and cites fresh local ingredients as his inspiration. If you want to up the romance factor, you can reserve one of the wooden pavilions, known as ‘Cabana Love Cocoons’.

We try a selection of happy hour specials, starting with a wonderfully refreshing Rhubarb Rosca which combines the tartness of rhubarb with juicy smashed limes, a hint of basil and a sprinkle of chilli. The End Of The World layers Jim Beam with smashed lime, and coke to create a classic taste, with a dash of Angostura Bitters adding depth. The Archer Politant is dark raspberry in colour and sweet in taste, a potent combination of Jim Beam, black currant, cranberry and lime floating with large chunks of ice. The Screaming Eagle arrives in a large enticing goblet floating with fresh orange segments. Made with De Kuyper Sour Grapefruit, gin and fresh orange, this enticing, bright orange concocotion fills a large goblet and obviously providing a good healthy dose of vitamin C, so could be considered a health drink! Just watch out, because you can barely taste the alcohol so its easy to knock back quickly.

A new addition to the roof top is the canapé menu specially created by Chef Ekadana, a special deal that includes a bottle of Bintang and a plate of canapés for RP 75,000. Choose from Crispy Tortilla layered with different fillings, Potatos and Black Pepper Beef, Baby Octopus marinated in chilli, and a Lamb Ratatouille with slices of lamb sausage served with tomato and boiled egg. Regular pool parties take place every Friday, Sunday, Wednesday, with bigger events such as the Urban Sunset Breeze happening every couple of weeks, check the website for details. Alison
