GREAT PROGRESS ON THE PROJECT WITH UNILEVER AND iKNOW-WHO ON REDUCING CARBON FOOTPRINT.

1 year ago, iKNOW-WHO started collaborating with Unilever to solve an important sustainability challenge – warming up the cold chain for ice cream. 9 universities were selected to work on it and the Co-Creation progress looks highly promising.

Unilever owns a fleet of over 3 million point-of-sale freezer cabinets across the globe. These freezers are typically set to a temperature below -18 degrees. By increasing this temperature whilst ensuring the same consumer experience, one could significantly reduce the greenhouse gas impact of the freezers. Thanks to the method of Co-Creation Networks, fundamentally novel breakthroughs have been reached.

iKNOW-WHO’s method and approach to Co-Creation Networks
:
Co-Creation networks are formed to enable simultaneous collaboration among at least three
interdependent teams with different complementary expertise, but having a shared goal to solve a challenge that matters to all partners involved. The method embraces inclusion for transformation of scientific knowledge into commercial breakthroughs that matter for our Planet.

Within Unilever it was decided that COVID-19 would not halt the Co-Creation of breakthroughs that protect our planet. Hence, despite the pandemic, the last couple of years have been highly disruptive in innovation by engaging iKNOW-WHO and 9 universities in Co-Creation of a sustainable ice cream.

–If you think you can do it alone, you are not thinking big enough.

/ Carla Hilhorst, Executive Vice President R&D Foods & Refreshment at Unilever
