Smart technology for a sustainable future – Stora Enso Skoghall Mill invests in ADS Uptime
In an environment where every second counts and conditions continuously challenge equipment, Stora Enso Skoghall Mill has implemented ADS Uptime from Leine Linde. With wireless monitoring, real-time diagnostics, and intelligent alarm handling – all accessible via mobile devices – the mill gains improved control, reduced downtime, and more efficient production.
Located in the heart of Värmland, on the shores of Lake Vänern, Stora Enso Skoghall Mill is one of Europe’s most advanced board mills. Each year, the site produces around one million tonnes of board, primarily for food packaging – in a process that must never stop.
Encoders built for extremes
Inside the mill, the air is warm and humid. Machinery roars as the board web races through the hundreds-of-metres-long board machine. It’s an environment where every component must withstand high temperatures, vibrations, moisture, and continuous motion – 24/7.
In this demanding setting, Leine Linde’s XHI 862 encoders play a vital role. They are used for process control and speed regulation of the drive motors in the board machine. Each driven roll is equipped with an encoder mounted on the drive motor, providing precise speed feedback. It’s a chain where every link must perform flawlessly – or the entire production line risks coming to a halt.
From cables to clicks – faster alarm handling
Previously, the mill used Leine Linde’s ADS Online – a reliable condition monitoring system. With ADS Uptime, they’ve taken the next step: a Bluetooth-based solution that is more flexible, user-friendly, and future-proof. The work of replacing the sensors is being carried out gradually during scheduled maintenance shutdowns, and the goal is for all sensors to be upgraded to ADS Uptime.
“There’s a huge difference in being able to access all the data on a mobile device. Previously, we had to connect a cable to each encoder to retrieve information and reset alarms. Now, we can analyse and acknowledge alarms directly from our phones – saving both time and effort,” says Rolf Konttaniemi, Maintenance Engineer at Skoghall Mill.
Real-time diagnostics – with Bluetooth and mobile access
Skoghall Mill is not just a production facility – it’s a hub for innovation in sustainable packaging. With investments in new technology and a clear focus on environmental performance and efficiency, it’s only natural that the mill also chooses future-ready solutions for its machinery.
Leine Linde’s encoders provide insights into the overall health of the process, as they reflect changes in the surrounding environment.
“By combining ADS Uptime with our other monitoring systems – such as speed and vibration analysis – we can quickly detect early deviations, for example in a roll’s drivetrain. The systems work together to pinpoint the component causing the issue. This allows us to plan inspections and corrective actions in advance, using the right resources during a scheduled stop – before a breakdown occurs,” Rolf explains.
With Leine Linde’s ADS Uptime, Stora Enso Skoghall has taken a significant step towards more accessible, efficient, and sustainable production – where every pulse signal counts.
Why Stora Enso Skoghall Mill chose ADS Uptime
- Wireless connectivity via Bluetooth – no need for physical connections to read or reset alarms.
- Mobile access – all data is available in an app, directly on the maintenance team’s phones.
- Proactive maintenance – the system provides early warnings for deviations in vibration, temperature, humidity, and speed.
-
Historical data and trend analysis – all data is logged automatically and can be used to identify patterns and prevent future faults.
Where are encoders located in a board machine?
Caption: The encoder is a critical component in a board machine, providing precise speed feedback. This accuracy is essential for maintaining product quality and preventing web breaks. An encoder continuously monitors roll speed via the drive motor and can detect changes that indicate emerging issues.
