State-of-the-art lighting technology in a rural village shop: This is the package customers get when shopping in the Tanto Enso store in Wörlitz. The supermarket chain equips its first store with Organic Response. The smart lighting control system saves energy, lowers lighting costs and enhances the customers’ shopping experience. Furthermore, additional data-based services can improve economic efficiency.

The LTS Licht & Leuchten GmbH from Tettnang near Lake Constance equipped the supermarket in Wörlitz with its quality products. Approximately 60 track-mounted spotlights of the Jett series as well as 30 small infrared sensors of the Organic Response lighting control system were installed. The smart system controls the entire light management in the regional supermarket. The Organic Response sensors recognize customer movements and adjust the lighting as required. The light is capable of anticipating, meaning the light level increases when a person walks down an aisle and is dimmed again when they have passed. Organic Response saves energy and makes light more balanced, sustainable, digital and intelligent.

Intelligent light

that adjusts while you shop

When you walk into the Tante Enso store, the light is set to a pleasant basic brightness. It accompanies customers on every step towards their desired product providing the optimal light level. The LTS Jett spots shine at 100 percent brightness in front of and above potential customers; once they move on, the spots are gradually dimmed to 80 percent and shine at a basic brightness of 40 percent in unvisited aisles. Just like customers need it while they shop. And when they leave Tante Enso and no one is left in the shop, the light is dimmed to the default minimum value after a predefined time period.

The individual sensors register the shoppers’ movements, analyse the direction of movement and forward this information to the neighbouring lights in real time. This means the luminaires communicate with each other to decide whether light levels need to be set higher or lower.

The recorded data helps companies like Tante Enso to calculate precisely where increases in efficiency can be achieved and where energy savings are possible. The more information the sensors record, the more precise the result. The data can also be integrated in third-party portals and used for further analyses.

A pioneer promising success

The store concept of the Tante Enso group is simple yet revolutionary: The operator aims at counteracting the demise of shops or supermarkets in rural areas by opening up new stores exactly in those towns or villages where over the past decades one local supplier after another has had to give up for economic reasons.

Tante Enso in Wörlitz
Photo: Paul Gerdes. Tante Enso is a supermarket chain that is open around the clock (24/7) and is mainly located in rural areas. With Organic Response, light is intelligently defined here: ubiquitous, cost-saving, optimally adapted and efficiently used.

As a pioneer for small rural supermarkets, Tante Enso has now written a success story with 23 stores. Tante Enso’s biggest challenge lies in being profitable despite their remote locations in rural areas. This includes minimizing energy costs and adjusting the range of products to the individual local needs. Tante Enso uses state-of-the-art technology in all areas to achieve both aims. Organic Response is one of those smart technologies that offer a high savings potential for electricity costs. In addition, the system helps the store operator optimize the product range.

The Tante Enso stores are open 24/7. Normally, the operator would have to keep all the lights on 24/7 as well. But that is not the case. With Organic Response, it is possible to only switch on the light when and where it is needed. To make sure that customers always feel comfortable, the default setting is a pleasant basic lighting. The light is only set to full brightness when a customer approaches a shelf or a product display. This means that Organic Response helps save electricity costs already when customers are actually shopping, but in particular at times with little or no customer frequency . The entire light concept has been harmonized to meet all requirements: those of the goods to be illuminated as well as those of staff, customers and operators who think and act efficiently and sustainably.

Light animates customers to buy

Lighting scenarios in the sales area can be key to sales. This makes shopping at Tante Enso a great experience. The lighting concept fulfils several tasks: As basic light, it defines the shape of the area, guides customers, highlights and stages the exhibited goods and creates a pleasant shopping atmosphere. The sophisticated lighting design by LTS Licht und Leuchten GmbH also helps extend the time customers stay in a store and stimulates consumer behaviour. If customers don’t actively perceive lighting in a store, then that means that lighting arrangements and customer movements blend perfectly. Customers can then focus on their shopping list and run errands without any stress.

This leads to improved visibility of surface structures, textures, reliefs and details. Contrasts become sharper and products can be optimally perceived with all their details and advantages.

Saving light – reducing costs – preserving resources

Organic Response helps use all benefits light has to offer. Shopfitter Andreas Strömer from Dessau also mentions the increased value of property in the context of illumination:

A store that is equipped with Organic Response offers an unprecedented way of saving electricity costs. For us shopfitters and for landlords, this development is ground-breaking because we can directly pass the savings potential on to the operator. He can save money and act sustainably at the same time, saving resources and reducing their CO2 footprint. This makes the property attractive and sustainable for all parties involved.“
- Andreas Strömer, Managing Director and Shareholder, Heinrich Stracke GmbH Ladenbau – Shopsystem

Tante Enso re-interprets local food supply

The basic principle of the Tante Enso supermarket chain is to open the shops only in rural, sparsely populated towns or villages. This strategy can only be successful if it is based on maximum economic efficiency and fully taps all energy saving potentials.

The Tante Enso shop in Wörlitz was opened on 20 April 2023. It was a very successful start all around because sustainable and energy-saving systems were used from the very beginning:

„When the property equipped with Organic Response was offered to us, we were sceptical at first, but today we are fully convinced that smart lighting control technology is the perfect solution. After only a few weeks of operation we received the first sensor data and it became clear that we had achieved energy savings of almost 70% compared to other shops. This result is the perfect argument as to why we recommend Organic Response.“
- Thorsten Bausch, Managing Director Enso eCommerce GmbH

One tool – more services

An additional benefit of Organic Response lies in the potential use of the anonymously recorded data for other analyses. The data allows, among other things, to draw conclusions on how attractive goods are by analysing the illumination time of the individual shelves. This can improve economic efficiency because the product range can be adjusted specifically to the customers. Shelves that are not visited by customers are not illuminated. This helps continuously adjust and optimize the goods to be sold to potential customers. It is also possible to draw conclusions regarding the occupancy of the shop, which would make it possible to scale the number and presence of staff. Based on the analysis data, the shelves and displays could be arranged in such a way that they become more visible and help spark buying interest.

Organic Response is an open system which can be combined with third-party systems. For example, the system could help collect data from the fridges and fresh produce aisles. Another idea for the future could entail a message being sent to the operator via an app as soon as a product is sold out to enable him to react faster than in the past. A smart service that guides customers through the store, based on their shopping list of course, would also be possible.

The Organic Response lighting control system and the quality luminaires by LTS Licht & Leuchten GmbH make it possible to understand and respond to customer requests more precisely. Sunny Sharma, LTS Product Manager and Organic Response specialist is enthusiastic by the new retail project and the associated possibilities it holds for the future:

„We, the LTS Licht & Leuchten GmbH team offer a step towards a healthy energy balance. Our intelligent light with the Organic Response control system turns your building into a sustainable place. We develop light solutions which have a major impact on global energy consumption and offer much more than a simple wireless lighting control system. The smart system allows for additional new and customer-focussed services that will revolutionise the retail market.“
- Sunny Sharma, LTS Product Manager

Saving operating costs as part of the overall concept

The combination of innovative LTS luminaires of the latest LED generation and the smart Organic Response lighting control system guarantees economic efficiency and long-term success. Only a suitable and attractive presentation of products using high-quality light will spark the customer’s interest in a product and make them buy it in the end. The Tante Enso shop in Wörlitz can draw on a harmonious, coherent concept which creates a sales space that can be used more efficiently and whose lighting technology helps minimize the carbon footprint at the same time.
