CTEK Performance - Charging And Maintaining Your Batteries Over Winter
Now that the colder months are upon us, it’s time to consider maintenance of your batteries. Battery output decreases by 20% when temperatures reach freezing and drop by as much as 50% when temperatures get even colder.
No one needs another battery grudge purchase when the weather heats up again. “Discharged and sulphated,” also known as the silent battery killers and acutely synonymous with battery damage, can easily be prevented by good maintenance charging when the battery is not in use. A sulphated battery causes 85% of all battery failures. Batteries develope sulphation each time they are undercharged or left discharged for a few days.
The resting state of a lead acid battery is 12.72V when fully charged and it will lose 0.1V per month. It reaches 12.4V after only a month or two of not being used, then starts to sulphate – leave it even longer and it will rapidly reach 11.8V, which can cause irreversible damage.
All batteries require some form of maintenance and CTEK has a wide range of solutions.
A charging comfort indicator, like the one supplied free with the CTEK MXS 5 AMP bundle, can be used to quickly check your batteries’ state of charge. This simple device uses a traffic light system to indicate whether your battery is fully charged, or in need of critical charging.
The New CS FREE is an innovative Start Booster, Portable Smart Charger (away from mains) and Power Bank. It is a ‘must have’ for boaties needing maintenance charging, emergency battery charging to start engines and for on-the-go power. During winter the CS FREE is ideal for maintenance charging small batteries away from mains and for using with larger batteries as a conventional charger when plugged into mains.
The CTEK MXS 5 and CS Free chargers include multi-stage patented charging technology – a maintenance charging stage which periodically checks battery state of health and voltage and provides a maintenance charge when appropriate. It also has a desulphation function that detects sulphated batteries and, if needed, removes sulphate by pulsing current and voltage.
In addition, the CTEK MXS 5 includes a reconditioning function to repair a neglected battery. This process is a controlled gassing and
mixing of the battery acid, which will restore the health of your battery.
