Press release -

Kennedy Point marina on target

Contractors are scheduled to begin work on the Kennedy Point Marina on Waiheke Island in September.

With the last outstanding challenges to the Environment Court’s 2018 approval of the marina at an end, and an improved internal layout of the 180-berth marina recently given the green light by Auckland Council, the developers have appointed a team to start construction. The marina will be located at Kennedy Point at the mouth to Waiheke’s Putiki Bay.

“The most obvious change to the initial design,” says Marina Operation Manager, Mark Schmack, “relates to the layout of the marina piers and berths. We’d originally considered a U-shaped marina, but have since altered it to a T-shape – a central spine with ‘fingers’ – running down the length of the facility. It’s a much more efficient use of the available space.”

A key feature of the marina’s design is its floating attenuators which eliminate the need for a solid breakwater. It will also be the country’s first marina to regulate and monitor the anti-foul coatings on vessels berthed in the facility. Only low copper or no-copper anti-fouling paints are allowed.

Vehicle and pedestrian access to the marina is from Donald Bruce Road via a new access wharf, with car parking (72) provided on New Zealand’s first floating car park pontoon, designed by internationally-acclaimed Swedish marina company, SF Marinas AB.

Utilities and services being provided at the marina include a public café, a small chandlery, bicycle racks and secure kayak/ SUP storage. It will also be equipped with a meeting venue, toilets/showers, laundry facilities, a maintenance berth and a grey and black water pump-out facility.

Berth licences are for a 35-year term with a right of renewal on expiry of the licence (conditions apply). While the marina has mostly permanent berths it will also provide temporary berths for smaller visiting boats.
