Book News and Reviews: Fundamentals on Surgical Simulation
Simulation is a fairly new and fast evolving science, particularly for the acquisition of procedural skills in interventional medicine. Find enclosed details of a new book authored by two Irishmen, one an experimental psychologist and the other a very senior and esteemed surgeon. Prof. Tony Gallagher has for more than a decade pioneered the validation of different types of simulations (physical models as well as virtual reality) for skill acquisition in surgery and endovascular medicine. Prof. Gerry O’Sullivan is past President of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (2006 - 2008) as well the European Surgical Association (2009 - 2010). Together they have produced a very readable and pragmatic account of how simulation should be understood and applied for effective and efficient skill acquisition for clinical practice.
