Press release -

Motosumo launches livestream at-home cycling classes with an app that turns any bike into a smart bike

Motosumo offers livestreaming classes with industry-renowned instructors and, at a low monthly price, is positioning itself as the affordable alternative for at-home indoor cycling.

Motosumo is a new streaming indoor cycling platform, with an app that turns any bike into a smart bike. Unlike other services, Motosumo doesn’t sell indoor bikes. Instead, their app generates fitness metrics by using smartphone motion sensors. Which means that anyone with a bike can join their live, interactive, and data-driven workouts. Even with the most basic setups. The potential reach is huge:

“There are 10 million Americans who have some kind of indoor bike setup at home,” says Motosumo CEO, Kresten Juel Jensen. “Globally, I’d say that figure goes up to around 30 million potential users. Not to mention all the people who would love to buy a bike and join online classes but are put off by expensive, high-end equipment.”

The classes themselves are also a key selling point for new users. Motosumo has recruited some of the most recognized and loved cycling instructors in the industry. Master Trainer Brooke Emory thinks Motosumo is perfect for those struggling to fill the void left by studio and gym closures during the pandemic. “We all miss human interaction right now. And Motosumo addresses that like no other platform. Our classes are all about interaction and recreating the studio experience at home.”

Before the pandemic, Brooke was working as an instructor and consultant for several top digital fitness platforms. As soon as she was approached by Motosumo, she dropped all of her consulting projects. “My main goal in my career is to change lives, no matter where you live, your current financial situation, or athletic capabilities,” says Brooke. “That’s why I joined Motosumo. You don't need to spend $2,000 on a high-end bike, on top of a monthly class fee. That’s crazy to me. Indoor bikes start at around $150, and you can get unlimited classes with me and my team for less than the cost of most gym memberships.”

Early responses to the platform have been overwhelmingly positive, with an average experience rating of 4.8 out of 5. JJ Hennessey from New York is one of the first Motosumo users. Originally, she joined because of the instructors; she’d trained with them for months before the pandemic. When quarantine hit, she tried a few different online platforms, but none wowed her as much as Motosumo. “Unlike with other at-home bike and fitness platforms, I don’t feel like I’m just a number to the instructor,” she says. “It has all the benefits of small-class training: experienced instructors, professional and welcoming staff, metrics, interactive features, super fun team races, and a strong sense of community. And I can take as many classes as I want per month for less than the price of one in-person class. I’m actually saving money during the pandemic.”

This affordable new model is set to shake up a market that has traditionally been viewed as expensive and elitist. “We see ourselves as David going up against Goliath,” says Kresten Juel Jensen, CEO of Motosumo. “There are some big players in this market, but they all target the luxury market. That’s not what we’re about. Who cares if you have a no-frills bike! We want this kind of service available to everyone.”

The Motosumo app was developed by a team of engineers and astrophysicists in Denmark.

They realized that the motion sensors found inside smartphones could be used to generate live fitness metrics, like cadence and power, on any bike. Thanks to machine learning and some powerful algorithms, the app is now so accurate that it can get a reading from just sitting on the handlebars of a stationary bike.

For years, Motosumo has been a mainstay in gyms and fitness studios around the world. Gym operators have used Motosumo to instantly upgrade their basic equipment and revitalize their indoor cycling and group fitness classes, with fun interactive features and games.

In 2020, they launched Motosumo Live, an at-home indoor cycling platform with an app that turns any bike into a smart bike.
