EXPERIENCE TODAY’S MOST VITAL LIVING ARTISTS IN MUNCH’S CONTEMPORARY ART PROGRAMME

This autumn at MUNCH will see an enormous range of current modern art gathered together under one roof.

Experience international star Camille Henrot – who was awarded the prestigious Edvard Munch Art Award in 2015. The young, pioneering artist Piya Wanthiang launches her contribution to our SOLO OSLO series. And last but not least, the group exhibition The Machine is Us is the most high tech exhibition ever shown at MUNCH. No less than 25 artists from Norway and abroad will be exhibiting works that extend outside the museum, in the lobby and even in a specially created app.

  • At last we get to show the public our big investment in the contemporary art scene. In combination with our collection exhibitions, this confirms MUNCH as the living museum it’s meant to be. With these exhibitions, we will help make MUNCH current, diverse, international and socially relevant. We’ll reach new audience groups through an expanded program that features new voices,’ says Stein Olav Henrichsen, director at MUNCH.

CAMILLE HENROT

MOUTH TO MOUTH:

The exhibition at MUNCH, entitled Mouth to Mouth, focuses on new and recent works from two of Henrot’s series: paintings, drawings and bronze sculpture from System of Attachment (2018–22) and prints on canvas from Dos and Don’ts (2022).

Mouth to Mouth is entered via a brown, felt-lined corridor where Henrot explores non-verbal relationships and fluid points of connection. In the early stages of childhood, the mouth is a site of exploration and understanding. The infant is highly susceptible in this preverbal state and the caregiver can also experience regression in the act of caring for another – being reminded of their own early conceptions of the world. Henrot is interested in the ambivalent relationship between the child and parent, perhaps most evident in Mother Tongue, of which there are eight on display in this exhibition. THE MACHINE IS US

The Machine is Us is an ambitious group exhibition with contemporary artists from Norway and abroad. In the exhibition, a total of 25 artists reflect in different ways on how new technology affects us, both as individuals and as a community.

Tulips cultivated with heat from data processing, block-chain sculptures made of sticks, and fast food for the machines of the future. The exhibition displays work by artists who examine the social impacts of new technologies and sketch imaginative future scenarios for a society in the midst of digital transformation. MUNCH is home to the world's largest collection of works by Norwegian artist Edvard Munch. 22 October 2021, MUNCH will open in a brand new building on Oslo’s waterfront. The bespoke structure, designed by estudio Herreros, will house more than 26,000 works that Edvard Munch bequeathed to the City of Oslo. The museum also manages collections donated by Rolf Stenersen, Amaldus Nielsen and Ludvig Ravensberg.

The new museum will trace the artist’s profound influence both on modern art and on artists through to the present day. Alongside displays of iconic artworks from the renowned permanent collection, temporary exhibitions will show Edvard Munch’s lasting influence in his own contemporary society, as well as on today’s generation of artists.

Visitors will experience the highlights of Edvard Munch’s oeuvre, in parallel with a wide-ranging programme of cultural events and experiences for visitors of all ages. From its location in Bjørvika, with unparalleled views of the Oslo Fjord, the museum will offer an extensive program of art and cultural experiences across thirteen floors.
