THIS AUTUMN AT MUNCH – EXPERIENCE TODAY’S MOST VITAL LIVING ARTISTS

Autumn at MUNCH will gather the full range of present-day modern art under one roof. With over 30 living artists – both well-known names and newcomers – from Norway and abroad, our visitors can look forward to an autumn full of great experiences at MUNCH. The programme spans everything from installations, video, painting, sculpture and a mass of concerts and live music. MUNCH is the place to be to experience today’s most important living artists.

MUNCH's autumn season kicks off with MUNCH Triennale, an ambitious contemporary art group show, which is launched this year and will continue every third year with a different socially relevant theme. In this first edition of MUNCH Triennale – titled The Machine Is Us – no less than 26 artists reflect, in different ways, on how new technology is affecting us, both as individuals and as a society. Most works in the exhibition include a variety of media and materials including video, sculpture, drawing, painting, computer games, VR installations and mobile phone apps. MUNCH Triennale – The Machine Is Us is being displayed in one of the biggest of MUNCH’s galleries, and will occupy several spaces inside and outside the museum.

MUNCH LIve

In MUNCH's new live program, performance continues with two commissioned works this autumn by current artists Brendan Fernandes and Catherine Christer Hennix.

MUNCH Live offers a wide range of concerts with innovative artists such as Lafawdah, Mykki Blanco, Brandee Younger and Jason Moran, as well as the Norwegian premiere of a new work by the living composer legend Éliane Radigue. Artist talks and conversation programs will be arranged in connection with the exhibitions. The entire MUNCH Live program will be released in June.

MUNCH is home to the world's largest collection of works by Norwegian artist Edvard Munch. 22 October 2021, MUNCH will open in a brand new building on Oslo’s waterfront. The bespoke structure, designed by estudio Herreros, will house more than 26,000 works that Edvard Munch bequeathed to the City of Oslo. The museum also manages collections donated by Rolf Stenersen, Amaldus Nielsen and Ludvig Ravensberg.

The new museum will trace the artist’s profound influence both on modern art and on artists through to the present day. Alongside displays of iconic artworks from the renowned permanent collection, temporary exhibitions will show Edvard Munch’s lasting influence in his own contemporary society, as well as on today’s generation of artists.

Visitors will experience the highlights of Edvard Munch’s oeuvre, in parallel with a wide-ranging programme of cultural events and experiences for visitors of all ages. From its location in Bjørvika, with unparalleled views of the Oslo Fjord, the museum will offer an extensive program of art and cultural experiences across thirteen floors.
