Paris, France - Right now, animal activists are chained to the Sodexo headquarters in Paris, France. The demonstrators are demanding that Sodexo end the use of cages for hens. Animal Equality, the international organization behind the action, says the French food services company made a previous commitment to end cage use globally by the end of 2025 but has failed to meet its own deadline.

“Sodexo had years to end cages for hens. Instead, it continues to choose cruelty, sourcing eggs from hens confined to one of the cruelest systems,” says Sharon Nunez, President of Animal Equality. “We chose to act because every second the company delays is another second a hen spends in confinement.”

Nearly 30 protestors have joined the action from France and other European countries. In the European Union, conventional “battery cages” used to confine hens are banned, but Sodexo continues to source eggs produced through these methods elsewhere.

The company operates in roughly 43 countries and serves over 100 million consumers every day. Activists say that, due to Sodexo’s scale, millions of animals are affected by the missed deadline—particularly in India, where the company is falling the most behind.

This is a developing story.

EDITOR’S NOTES

  • In this release, “cages” refers to cage systems used to confine hens in egg production, including enriched or furnished cages. These systems restrict hens’ movement and prevent them from fully expressing natural behaviors.
  • Additional visuals, including footage, to come.
