Press release -

Exhibition at CEATEC 2024

NGK INSULATORS, LTD. (hereinafter, “NGK”) announces that it will exhibit its technologies in the General Exhibits area of CEATEC 2024, to be held at Makuhari Messe (Chiba City, Chiba Prefecture) from October 15 (Tue.) to October 18 (Fri.). On the 15th, vice president will give a lecture about well-being with ultra-thin and compact lithium-ion rechargeable battery, “EnerCera”, at a Special Venue within the event.

CEATEC is Japan’s largest technology-focused event held each year under the outline of “aiming to realize Society 5.0 that balances economic development with solutions to social issues, we will bring together people, technology, and information from all industries and business sectors to envision the future through co-creation.” This year it is being held for the 25th time with a special theme of “Innovation for All.”

NGK’s exhibition theme will be “A clean and smart future society made by ceramic technology,” showcasing the efforts to realize Society 5.0 by combining cyberspace and physical spaces to create a society that is sustainable, resilient, and that provides well-being for diverse individuals. In the exhibition, we will show ultra-thin and compact lithium-ion rechargeable battery series, “EnerCera”, which are ideal batteries for wearable devices, semiconductor wafers such as high-quality gallium nitride (GaN) wafers, hybrid bonded wafers for high-performance optical devices, and zinc rechargeable batteries that are extremely safe and environmentally friendly. We will also exhibit 8-inch silicon carbide (SiC) wafers for the first time in Japan.

EnerCera

EnerCera battery series is a semi solid-state rechargeable battery which incorporates NGK’s proprietary crystal-oriented ceramic electrodes. It has unique characteristics compared to conventional lithium-ion battery, such as ultra-thin/ultra-small size, high capacity, high output, high heat resistance, and long lifetime. EnerCera Pouch with a thickness of 0.45 mm are thin, lightweight, and extremely safe, making them ideal as batteries for wearable devices. We will show maintenance-free devices, such as a location tracker with solar cell, and ideas for wearable device applications.

    Next-generation wafers

    • Bonded wafers

Bonded wafers are substrates for electronic devices fabricated by bonding together differing materials. The two types of substrates are directly bonded without using adhesive and then the functional layer undergoes ultra-precise thin polishing. This enables the addition of physical properties such as high insulation, high thermal conductivity, low thermal expansion, and high rigidity of the base substrate to improve various characteristics including temperature characteristics. Hybrid bonded wafers contribute to creating smaller, faster, and less power-consuming devices for applications such as filters for 5G communications, modulation devices for optical communications, sub-terahertz (sub-THz) antennas, and MEMS (Micro Electro Mechanical Systems) devices.

    • Semiconductor wafers

NGK’s SiC wafers that have successfully shown a huge reduction in basal plane dislocation (BPD) density, a critical defect that lowers the performance of power semiconductors, will be exhibited in Japan for the first time. We have realized this reduction in BPD density using NGK’s proprietary crystal growth method. This technology is contributing to improving the reliability of power devices used in inverters for electric vehicles (EVs) and other applications.

NGK will also showcase high-quality GaN and AlN wafers.

    Zinc rechargeable battery

zinc rechargeable batteries are storage batteries that use zinc for the negative electrode and NGK’s proprietary ceramics for the separator between the positive and negative electrodes. Since flammable organic solvent is not used for the electrolyte, the battery has a high safety profile and energy density, making it compact and giving it the characteristic of being suitable for installation in any location, including indoors. As a maintenance-free battery with a long service life and that does not require remote monitoring or preventative maintenance, it makes an ideal backup power source for key equipment. It does not contain harmful lead and is easily recyclable, so it is a safe, reliable, and environmentally-friendly battery.

The booth will also show its use in KDDI’s base station trial aimed at strengthening measures against power outages in disasters*.
