Energinet and NNIT accelerate the digital green transition

Energinet is investing three-digit DKK millions in an IT platform to improve the handling of the enormous amounts of energy data received from an increasing number of vendors on the Danish energy market. NNIT and ChangeGroup have been selected as technology providers for the project based on a tender.

Energinet has partnered with NNIT and subcontractor ChangeGroup to provide DevOps specialists for the development of Energinet’s component-based IT/OT platform (Operational Technology) over the next four years, with the possibility of extending the collaboration for an additional four years, in a framework agreement worth three-digit DKK millions.

“The green transition and the safeguarding of our critical infrastructure have never been more important than they are today. For example, the Danish Center for Cybersecurity assesses that the threat to the energy sector is very high, so our technology and information security level must be top-notch. We are not just developing an IT project, but a strategic and central platform for the future energy system, and therefore it is important for us to collaborate with a vendor who thinks security-by-design and has the right business and technological skills,” says Nicolaj Nørgaard Peulicke, CIO, Energinet.

DevOps skills were crucial

NNIT and ChangeGroup were chosen as DevOps providers due to a strong solution based on well-documented methods and solid security practices. Energinet also emphasized NNIT’s DevOps approach to OT environments, focus on knowledge and competence building, and effective collaboration structures. Additionally, NNIT’s security-anchored work processes and ability to ensure continuous knowledge sharing and integration with Energinet’s own teams were highlighted.

“Energinet is a central player in the green transition in Denmark and a strategically important customer for us. The agreement not only strengthens our position within the energy and supply sector but also confirms our ability to deliver highly specialized IT and DevOps skills in a highly regulated environment among the part of NNIT’s customer portfolio that sets the highest security requirements,” says Kasper Søndergaard Andersen, Senior Vice President, Head of Region Denmark, NNIT, and adds:

“Energinet's significant investments in technology and security match our ambitions to deliver solid solutions to the public sector and simultaneously open the door to more collaboration with key players in the energy sector.”

Energinet’s program is a groundbreaking initiative aimed at developing a new, modular, and secure IT/OT platform to support Denmark’s energy infrastructure. The platform will replace older systems and ensure the development of flexible, scalable, and future-proof solutions that support the green transition and increase supply security.

The platform is based on modern technologies and DevOps principles as well as a range of security principles applicable to the energy sector.
