  • Ingestion of car tyre rubber leads to uptake of toxins in marine species

Crumb rubber made from end of life car tyres is a common waste product in urban societies and a nuisance for the parents of football players, whose children bring the particles home in their sports clothing and shoes. It can also end up in seas and oceans. What happens if marine animals mistake crumb rubber for food?

  • EUROPAM public outreach activity

This fall Biodiversa+ project "EUROPAM" arranged an public outreach event in Tromsø Norway. The event was part of the Research Council of Norway "Research Days".
The full title of the EUROPAM project is "European Spatial-Temporal Large-Scale Sea Noise Management & Passive Acoustic Monitoring of Marine Megafauna". The project aim to increase the knowledge of anthropogenic impacts on marine

  • Teaching Cold Climate Engineering in Greenland

By: Kristine B. Pedersen, Akvaplan-niva; Gunvor M. Kirkelund, The Technical University of Denmark; Pernille E. Jensen, The Technical University of Denmark
In Sisimiut, a town of 5,600 people and approximately 1000 sled dogs, located on the western coast of Greenland, 75 km north of the Arctic Circle, sits a campus of the Technical University of Denmark (DTU). The campus hosts an Arctic master i

  • Polar bears and whales in the spotlight of toxicological studies

ByPierre Blévin (Akvaplan-niva), Heli Routti (the Norwegian Polar Institute) and Anders Goksøyr (the University of Bergen)
Many pollutants are toxic and potentially harmful for marine life. Figuring out the pollutants’ effects on whales and polar bears is not easy. Traditional methods have limitations, but alternative research strategies are entering the laboratories.

  • Glider setting sail to study reef effects from Hywind Scotland

By Virginie Ramasco, Trude Borch and Lionel Camus // Akvaplan-niva
To reduce reliance on fossil fuels, wind parks have been established in coastal areas. Besides providing renewable energy, these installations may benefit biodiversity by serving as artificial reefs that marine organisms can colonise. Could floating wind parks in offshore waters offer the same conditions?

  • Where wild krill are

    By Benjamin Merkel, Akvaplan-niva
Antarctic krill and Ice krill are key species within the Southern Ocean. They are important prey for marine predators such as the big baleen whales as well as seals, seabirds, and penguins. In turn they are important grazers of plankton and hence essential for the energy flow and nutrient cycling in the Southern Ocean. Antarctic krill is also the focus of a mod

I prosjektet "A collaborative platform to support upscaling of spotted wolffish aquaculture" skal de fire forskningsinstituttene Akvaplan-niva, Nofima, Nord Universi

  • Update from the polar front (jelly)fish group

By Frida Cnossen and Ingvild Ytterhus Utengen, Akvaplan-niva
Greetings from 78 degrees North! We have just spent 12 days on a research cruise for the PolarFront project onboard RV Helmer Hanssen collecting and identifying a variety of macrozooplankton and pelagic fish. We have also looked at fish stomachs and collected samples for stable isotope analysis to study trophic interactions.

  • Arctic wildlife at polar front research cruise

By MSc student Lars Ursem (lars.ursem@wur.nl)
When writing this it has been over a week since I left Tromsø to go on this research cruise to the polar front. Unfortunately, we do not have a dedicated marine mammal and seabird survey going on onboard as we have encountered a lot of wildlife over the past few days.
In terms of birds there is, of course, the “normal” stuff with northern fulmar
