Field study and plastic clean-up operation by the CRIPTIC team at the Caspian Sea coast

The CRIPTIC team completed the second field study and clean-up operation at the Caspian Sea coast

A team of more than 50 volunteers – university students and lecturers, early-career scientists and experienced researchers, engineers from the private sector, and local community representatives- participated in the fieldwork and clean-up on the 6th of November 2022.

Considering the weather conditions - heavy rain and strong wind in a project pilot area, and the density of plastic litter distributions on the Caspian Sea coastal zone near Neftcahala region in Azerbaijan, the teamwork was organized in 10 groups with 4-6 persons in each. Despite the harsh late autumn weather, the team members kept motivated, and the mission was successfully completed.

CRIPTIC is a joint project financially supported by HMF and led by Akvaplan-niva. The partners are the Norwegian Institute for Water Research (NIVA), SALT, TerraNor from Norway; Azerbaijan Geographical Society (AGS) with Caspian Integrated Scientific Network (CASPISNET) - co-lead from Azerbaijan, the Institute of Geography of Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (IGA), and Sukanal SRDI of Azersu from Azerbaijan.
