For World Environment Day, we’re highlighting the sustainable reuse of materials in Kunstsilo’s school education programs ♻️

Along the southern coast of Norway, Pacific oysters have become an increasing challenge. They invade beaches and cut into both nature and feet—quite literally. At Kunstsilo, we’ve chosen to look at the problem with fresh eyes: Can this invasive species be transformed into something beautiful and useful? 🦪

Together with Res-I-Tec, Inc., Fagskolen i Agder, and Future Materials, we’ve developed a completely unique and eco-friendly material – oyster clay! By crushing and processing oyster shells, we’ve created a clay now used in both school workshops and public art projects. The sculptures shaped from this clay are not only aesthetic – they tell a story of creativity, circular thinking, and a love for nature 🌱

Welcome to The Dream Ballad 😍 Now on view at Kunstsilo!

Torvald Moseid spent 14 years completing the last of his embroidered monumental works – the tapestry illustrating the legendary medieval poem Draumkvedet. The origin of the tale is unknown, and it was passed down orally for generations before the first version was written down in the 1840s. Most of the recordings were made around Eidsborg Stave Church in Telemark, but also in Setesdal, where Moseid himself was born and where he first heard the poem performed at the age of nine.

The poem tells the story of Olav Åsteson, who falls into a deep sleep. When he finally awakens after 13 days, he mounts his horse and rides to the church to recount his visions. Åsteson reveals that he has seen into the realms of heaven and the depths of the abyss, that he has crossed Gjallarbrui – the bridge that separates this world from the hereafter – and witnessed the judgment that falls upon humankind on Judgment Day.

At nearly 55 meters wide, the tapestry holds a unique place in modern Norwegian textile art. Moseid used neither cartoons nor sketches before creating the motifs more or less freehand with needle and thread. The technique he employed was simple laid work, where the thread is placed on the surface and fastened with small crosswise stitches – a method that allows for a delicate and intricate expression. In Draumkvedet, it is as though Moseid is almost drawing with thread across the linen canvas.

Last chance to see the exhibition "Else Hagen. Between people" (Sunday June 1st)

Else Hagen emerged as a prominent artist in Norway after World War II, creating numerous paintings that challenged contemporary notions of family life and gender roles, themes that remain relatable and relevant today.

Else Hagen's artistic practice was diverse, encompassing painting, printmaking, material art, and large-scale public works, including the notable mosaic Samfunn in the staircase hall of the Norwegian parliament building, Stortinget.

Hagen’s modern and expressive approach emphasized formal composition and abstraction, addressing themes like close relationships, family dynamics, women’s experiences, and urban social life.

A collaboration between @stavangerkunstmuseum, @trondheimkunstmuseum and @nasjonalmuseet, the exhibition concludes its tour at Kunstsilo.

Thank you to everyone who came to the opening of The Dream Ballad on Thursday evening 🤩

A special thank you to Kim Rysstad for a beautiful musical performance!

Torvald Moseid from Setesdal (b. 1917 - 2000) spent 14 years completing the last of his embroidered monumental works – the carpet that illustrates the legendary medieval poem The Dream Ballad.

The poem tells the story of Olav Åsteson who falls into a deep sleep. When he finally wakes up after 13 days, he throws himself on horseback and rides towards the church to tell his visions. Åsteson can tell that he has seen into the kingdom of heaven and down into the abyss, he has crossed Gjallarbrui – the bridge that separates this world from the afterlife and witnessed the judgment that falls on people on Judgment Day.

With a width of almost 55 meters, the carpet stands in a unique position in modern Norwegian textile art.

Last chance to see "Time. Mette Tronvoll" at Kunstsilo!

Sunday May 25th is the final day of this photo exhibition which showcases nearly 90 works of one of Norway's most prominent art photographers.

The photographs have been created over the past two years, through repeated visits to the island of Hidra off the coast of Flekkefjord in Southern Norway. The exhibition presents these entirely new works alongside a selection of Tronvoll’s earlier photographs.

One of her early series, AGE Women 25-90 (1994), depicts older women from Svorkmo in Orkland and younger women in New York, portrayed against a brown-red canvas. The difference between the two groups becomes clear through the way they have been photographed, with each woman depicted frontally and facing the camera. The portraits open up reflections on psychological, experiential, cultural, and generational differences and conditions.
