Kunstsilo opens 2026 with Munch – as you’ve never seen him before! When Kunstsilo opens its doors to a new exhibition year on 5 February 2026, it will be with one of Norway’s greatest artists at the centre: Edvard Munch. Throughout his career, Edvard Munch created portraits of family, friends, lovers, writers, artists, patrons, and collectors – as well as a wide range of self-portraits. The exhibition «Edvard Munch Portraits» offers the public a rare entry point into Munch’s artistic practice, shedding light on little-known aspects of the legendary artist. The exhibition Edvard Munch Portraits was first shown at the @nationalportraitgallery in London in spring 2025, and was the first exhibition in the UK to focus on this important, yet sometimes overlooked, aspect of Munch’s practice. Kunstsilo was awarded the prestigious @prixversailles Versailles World Title on Thursday December 4th! The announcement was made at UNESCO’s headquarters in Paris during the Prix Versailles award ceremony. Kunstsilo had been shortlisted as the only Nordic museum among seven candidates in the category World’s Most Beautiful Museums. “It is an honour to receive this recognition on behalf of Kunstsilo,” says Maria Mediaas Jørstad, Director of Kunstsilo. “We are proud to be highlighted among so many strong international projects. Being awarded the Prix Versailles World Title is a tremendous achievement! This recognition belongs to everyone who has made this journey possible,” Jørstad continues. “Kunstsilo is the custodian of the Tangen Collection—the world’s largest collection of Nordic Modernism—and has become a powerhouse for art and cultural experiences. I would like to thank all our forward-thinking and courageous public and private contributors. Without their efforts, Kunstsilo would never have come to life. My gratitude goes to the Ministry of Culture, Agder County, the City of Kristiansand and Cultiva for their commitment and long-term support. I would also like to extend special thanks to the AKO Foundation for their decisive and lasting support for Kunstsilo. And finally, my thanks to the architects at Mestres Wåge Arquitectes, BAX and Mendoza Partida, as well as Scenario Interior Architects, who have transformed this historic building into a modern art museum for the 21st century. This recognition inspires us to continue thinking boldly! We are proud to represent the values of Prix Versailles: social participation and interaction—quite literally by breaking down silos,” says Jørstad.

Any plans for the weekend? Check out "Snowflake - Winterland at Kunstsilo" ❄️ In our popular room S-Lab, we’ve transformed the space into a magical winter landscape where children and adults can explore, play, and create together. Kids can design their own digital snowflakes and watch them float across the walls, becoming part of the ever-growing snowy world. In the heart of the room, you’ll find three magical Christmas tents – trees you can crawl into and let your imagination run wild. Inside, you can play with colours, make winter music, or snuggle up with a book and enjoy a cosy story.

We’re looking back on a fantastic opening weekend at Kunstsilo! You can now experience Inger Johanne Rasmussen’s colorful and monumental works on view in Kunstsilo’s 4th floor. The acclaimed textile artist, who has held more than 20 solo exhibitions both nationally and internationally, is now presenting her exhibition My Own Room at Kunstsilo. The weekend also marked the first time The @lumen_prize held its annual awards ceremony for artists working at the intersection of art and technology. With over 2,200 submissions from 71 countries, the international prize set a new record for entries — and was held in Norway for the very first time. The awards weekend opened on Friday with the unveiling of Growing, a new site-specific work by former Lumen Prize winners @lab212_ , projected onto Kunstsilo’s iconic façade. On Saturday, New Signals in Arts Technologies – A Lumen Seminar Programme took place, featuring several exciting discussions on art and technology. A huge thank you to everyone who participated and celebrated this eventful weekend with us! #Kunstsilo #IngerJohanneRasmussen #Lab212 #TheLumenPrize #Kristiansand

Are you joining us this Friday? The double exhibition opening of Inger Johanne Rasmussen and @lab212_ is coming up and we could not be more excited! In "A Room of My Own", Inger Johanne Rasmussen opens the door to her textile universe – a space filled with vivid colours, intricate patterns, and layered stories. She works in large-scale formats, creating monumental wall tapestries that command space and leave lasting impressions. Her works appeal instantly through their visual allure, and more profoundly over time, through rich references, personal inspiration and quiet depth. Kunstsilo's outdoor façade will also be transformed on November 7th, showcasing French art collective Lab212 new digital work "Growing". Through projection mapping and real-time environmental data, the façade of Kunstsilo is transformed into a living system – an organism in growth, shaped by climate, atmosphere, and time. The installation is part of Kunstsilo’s long-term collaboration with@lumen_prize, an international award that celebrates art created with technology. Get your tickets at kunstsilo.no!
