Quantafuel takes lead position in the Danish waste market

- SCROLL DOWN FOR DANISH VERSION - Quantafuel strengthens its presence in the Danish waste market by investing in a plastic pre-treatment line in Aalborg to secure feedstock for the Skive plant and start building volumes for a larger plant in Esbjerg.

Today, Quantafuel is pleased to announce its plans to invest in a plastic waste sorting line adjacent to Geminor’s existing operations in Aalborg, Denmark. This is an important step to secure the feedstock needs both for Quantafuel’s plant in Skive and the planned new plant in Esbjerg. At Quantafuel’s plants, used plastic waste is upgraded into valuable products with minimal pollution, creating a circular economy, complementing mechanical recycling of plastics.

The investment will enable Quantafuel via Geminor to participate in waste tenders early, and gain experience operating a plastic waste sorting line catering to Danish household waste for both the chemical and mechanical recycling industry. The total CAPEX for the investment is NOK 60 million.

The pre-treatment plant will be operational in Q1 2022, have a capacity of 20.000 ton per year and is expected to generate NOK 30 million in additional revenue with an internal rate of return (IRR) of 22%.

“Our investment will help Denmark reach its ambitious strategy to become a pioneer within recycling in Europe, as well as enabling their goal of 60 percent actual recycling in tenders going forward. This is great news for all municipalities wondering how to reach these targets, as we are confident we have the solution,” says Quantafuel’s CEO Kjetil Bøhn, and continues:

“By investing in our own pre-treatment line, we can provide an integrated service to every municipality. In just a few years’ time, municipalities will be required by law to recycle more of their plastic waste. Today, household plastic waste contains 30-40 percent other materials, so it must be sorted before we, or anyone else, can recycle it. Together with Geminor, we will help solve this challenge,” Bøhn continues.

“We are pleased that the Climate Plan for a green waste sector and circular economy from 2020 is already creating a strong, Danish market for recycling companies. Quantafuel’s large investments in Denmark is an example if this. The industry is ready to take on the task of recycling the Danish people’s waste if they are given the opportunity to do so,” says Karin Klitgaard, the Deputy Director of The Confederation of Danish Industry (DI), Denmark’s largest business- and employers’ organisation.

Together with Geminor, Quantafuel aims to provide fully integrated, independent sorting and recycling plants with mechanical and chemical recycling capacity, as well as tracking and logistics capacity that can document every step of the value chain. These plants will deliver certified, recycled material to leading consumer goods companies, completing the circular economy of plastic waste in a transparent and documented manner. Quantafuel has already been granted certificates both from ISCC PLUS and REDcert2, making us a frontrunner in the recycling industry.

  • What is chemical recycling of plastic waste?

Chemical recycling involves breaking down plastic waste into monomers – the basic building blocks of plastic. These building blocks can be put back together to produce new plastic as well as other substances. Chemical recycling is a technology well suited to handle plastic waste that is unfit for mechanical recycling and displaces virgin oil and gas in the petrochemical industry.

Quantafuel indtager førerpositionen på det danske affaldsmarked


Quantafuel styrker sin tilstedeværelse på det danske affaldsmarked ved at investere i en plastaffaldssorteringslinje i Aalborg for at sikre råmateriale til plastgenanvendelsesanlægget i Skive og begynde at opbygge volumener til et større anlæg i Esbjerg.


Quantafuel glæder sig over i dag at kunne annoncere sine planer om at investere i en plastaffaldssorteringslinje i tilknytning til Geminors eksisterende aktiviteter i Aalborg. Dette er et vigtigt skridt for at sikre behovet for råmaterialer for både Quantafuels anlæg i Skive og det planlagte nye anlæg i Esbjerg. På Quantafuels anlæg opgraderes brugt plastaffald til værdifulde plastprodukter med minimal miljøpåvirkning, hvilket skaber en cirkulær værdikæde, der supplerer den traditionelle mekaniske genanvendelse af plast.

Investeringen vil via Geminor gøre Quantafuel i stand til at deltage i affaldsudbud på et tidligt tidspunkt og opnå erfaring med at drive en sorteringslinje for plastaffald, der kan anvendes til dansk husholdningsaffald til både kemisk og mekanisk genanvendelse. Den samlede CAPEX for investeringen er 60 mio. norske kroner.

Sorteringsanlægget vil være i drift i Q1 2022, have en kapacitet på 20.000 ton om året og forventes at generere 30 mio. norske kroner i yderligere omsætning med en IRR (Internal Rate of Return) på 22 %.

"Ved at investere i vores egen sorteringsanlæg kan vi levere en integreret service til alle kommuner. Om få år bliver kommunerne ved lov pålagt at genanvende en stor andel af deres plastaffald. I dag indeholder husholdningsplastaffald 30-40 procent andre materialer, så det skal sorteres, før vi eller andre kan genbruge det. Sammen med Geminor hjælper vi med at løse denne udfordring," fortsætter Bøhn.

”Vi er glade for, at Klimaplanen for en grøn affaldssektor og cirkulær økonomi fra 2020 allerede skaber et stærkt, dansk marked for genanvendelsesvirksomheder. Det er Quantafuels store investeringer i Danmark et eksempel på. Industrien er klar til at løfte opgaven med genanvendelse af danskernes affald, hvis de får mulighed for det,” siger underdirektør Karin Klitgaard fra Dansk Industri.

Sammen med Geminor sigter Quantafuel mod at levere fuldt integrerede, uafhængige sorterings- og genanvendelsesanlæg med mekanisk og kemisk genanvendelseskapacitet samt sporings- og logistikkapacitet, der kan dokumentere hvert trin i værdikæden. Disse anlæg vil levere certificerede, genanvendte materialer til førende forbrugsvarevirksomheder, der gennemfører den cirkulære økonomi for plastaffald på en gennemsigtig og dokumenteret måde. Quantafuel er allerede blevet tildelt certifikater fra både ISCC PLUS og REDcert2, hvilket gør os til frontløbere i genbrugsindustrien.

Nyt anlæg i Esbjerg på rette vej
Byrådet i Esbjerg godkendte enstemmigt Quantafuels miljøansøgning i maj, og vi har igangsat arbejdet med at sikre strategiske og finansielle partnere til projektet.
