PEMA announces the three university teams that will compete in the Student Challenge final 2018 at TOC Europe

Teams from the University of Hamburg, Blekinge Institute of Technology and Hamburg University of Technology have been selected to qualify to the final of the Port Equipment Manufacturers’ Association (PEMA) Student Challenge competition, to take place at TOC Europe in Rotterdam next month.

In April 2018, the 6th PEMA Student Challenge question was announced, marking the official launch of this year’s competition. With a strong focus on reducing the environmental impact of ports, teams were tasked with drawing on existing technologies such as shore power and green energy to propose a sustainable, yet economically competitive solution.

Having qualified through the first stage of the competition, the top three teams now have just over one month to develop their original concepts to a complete proposal to present to the TOC Europe general assembly at the live final.

Following finalists’ presentations, the judging panel, comprising industry experts, journalists and prominent industry figures, will review each proposal according to innovation potential, practicability, and academic value with the overall winning team collecting the EUR 1,000 prize money.

With all qualifying teams having previously participated, this year promises to be an exciting event as the University of Hamburg will face tough competition defending their title of Student Challenge champions.

This year’s Student Challenge live final will be held on June 14 at 12:00pm in the TOC Seminar Theatre. It is free to attend for all delegates, speakers, visitors and exhibitors.

PEMA will also be exhibiting at TOC Europe, at stand C112.

As part of PEMA’s education outreach, the Student Challenge provides a stimulating way to expose students to the real business of the ports and terminal world, as well as to highlight university programmes and student talent to the ports business community.
