Direct selling, a flourishing business in Egypt

Egypt ranked 102^nd out of 152 countries in the UNCTAD business-to-consumer E-commerce index 2019, leaping 11 places on the list compared to 2018. The index tests the economy’s readiness to support online shopping.

Index countries are ranked based on four main indicators: account ownership at a financial institution, individuals using the Internet, Postal Reliability Index and Secure Internet servers.

Egypt’s efforts are consolidated in this sector through the telecommunications plan to digitalize content and enhance e-payments, and hence, e-commerce. The country has recently announced its intention to launch a digital e-commerce platform to compete with global ones, such as Amazon and AliBaba. Furthermore, taxation laws related to the growing e-commerce industry are currently being revised to control the industry.
