Have standing breaks at work to reduce the time you spend sitting

Recent study indicates that people in the US are sitting all day, and hating it! However, they are not doing anything to change it, and of the 24 hours of the day they are active only 3 hours per day on average. This has led to many sitting-related diseases which are caused by our sedentary lifestyle.

In fact excessive sitting is a risk factor on most of the common causes of death, such as heart disease, stroke and diabetes. Daily exercise is not enough to counteract the ill effects of too much sitting. As soon as we sit down in on old-fashioned office chair our circulation slows down. This in turn will lead to less energy and poor concentration as our brain is not getting enough oxygen.

– Standing for the whole day is not a solution either, says Maija Korpi, physiotherapist from Salli Systems. – Standing puts a lot of pressure on joints and is very tiring. If you need to stand, try to keep a balanced posture, weight evenly on both feet, and use standing mats or standing boards to add movement to the day.

The ideal solution to avoid the risks of both sitting and standing is to sit on a two-part, swinging Salli Saddle Chair and to use an adjustable desk. The standing-like posture allows one to sit in the right position and the circulation remains undisturbed. However, even if the swinging seat enables movement and muscle activity also during sitting, it is important to get off the chair regularly. Take standing breaks at least every 1 to 2 hours, by raising your desk and standing for 10 to 20 mins to activate your body. Try it and you will notice a difference!
