SyntheticMRs software used for monitoring of treatment efficacy in MS at additional hospitals
The medical imaging company SyntheticMR AB, a subsidiary of Accelerator Nordic AB, has, through their partner Sectra, received another order for their magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) software from Västerbotten County in Sweden.
The software, SyMRI™, which is integrated in the hospital’s radiology IT solutions from Sectra, was taken into clinical use at Umeå University Hospital in Västerbotten in 2011 to monitor the treatment efficacy of multiple sclerosis (MS). It is now taken into clinical practice at two more hospitals in the region, Skellefteå and Lycksele.
”In Umeå we use SyMRI for the majority of our neuro exams. Now we want to expand to include more of our MS-patients across the entire region. The data that we collect with SyMRI on MS-patients goes to the national Swedish MS-register in order to add to our knowledge about the development of MS”, says Dr Richard Birgander, Neuroradiologist at Umeå University Hospital.
“Offering our customers clinical applications that are closely integrated with the radiology workflow enables better diagnostics and increases efficiency in the healthcare sector,” says Per Elmhester, Product Manager of Clinical Solutions at Sectra.
With SyMRI, examination time per patient and MRI exam can be significantly shortened, thus improving efficiency. At the same time, it is possible to automatically estimate a measure for brain atrophy and measure the volume of local brain structures and lesions. This can be used in order to more easily follow the development and progress of diseases such as MS, allowing for better treatment.

SyntheticMR AB, a subsidiary to Accelerator Nordic AB, has developed SyMRI®, software for more effective Magnetic Resonance Imaging. SyMRI uses a rapid MRI scan that provides a measure for patient tissue properties. Using these properties conventional MRI images and tissue images can be generated. In this way examination time is reduced for the patient and the decision support is improved for the radiologist. For more information, please visit www.syntheticmr.se.
