How to get the right answers?

“I like to be one step ahead of the customer” – Meet our colleague Mattias Ericsson.

Mattias does not like assumptions. He wants to know. Down to the millimeter.
” -The only thing you can be sure of – if you in a project assume things – is that it will not be a hundred procent accurate in the end.”

Mattias continuous: ” -Some properly asked questions in the beginning of the project, often saves a thousand question marks in the project’s final phase.”

Maybe Mattias got this attitude during his education at Chalmers, or maybe he got with it from his childhood, which was marked by a genuine interest in technology. As a twelve year old Mattias was thrilled by building his own solutions. To be able to improve his own world. The tool back then was the Commodore 64 and with this he altered his own world by building computerized disco lights to the school disco and to ensure the safety of his bedroom by building a computer-controlled code lock, so he could keep meddling siblings out of reach.

As a system architect at ADDQ Gothenburg there are not two days that are alike – which suits Mattias like a hand in a glove, as you say in Sweden. To deliver a total solution to the customer, where Mattias is project manager, programmer and engineer makes the projects effective.

” -Safety for me is to know exectly what we are expecting to deliver. And because I’m usually a part of both the project’s first, and final meeting, I will be very personally involved.”

Continuous development is also something that Mattias is passionate about. To use the newly acquired knowledge of a project and bring it to the next. That’s how you design future systems according to Mattias, regardless of whether the end product is a satellite or a napkin. And diverse end products like that actually fills Mattias days at the office.

”-It doesn’t matter if we’re testing hydraulics for the industry or headphones for machine operators – we always design our systems in the same way regardless of the component that are to be tested.”

Getting it right from the ground up, to ask the right questions and to never assume or guess. That’s the parameters Mattias think is the most important to have with you, no matter projects. To avoid beeing hindsight and instead spend the time looking ahead and anticipate the customer needs at a slightly longer horizon. That’s when you can be sure you evolve. Both as a person and as a company.

Mattias Ericsson is R&D Manager at ADDQ Consulting and is a LabVIEW Certified Architect. He has been working more than 15 years with test system development and is one of the main architects behind ADDQs new result management system QRM – Quality Result Management.

If you want to hear more about Mattias and take part of his knowledge in R&D be sure to see his presentations at NI day about

The art of architectureChoosing architecture in your system is one of the most important things to do and there are many things to consider, like performance, maintenance, configuration and extension of the system. This presentation is about choosing the strategy for your architecture of how to build a measurement system.

And at Nordic Test Forum about

Wheeler Analysis – A powerful alternative to a traditional Gage R&R
A traditional Gage R&R analysis is widely used as the method of a measurement system analysis (MSA) in PCBA production. It origins back to the 1960s and has since 1989 been adopted by the AIAG, but it still deals with some fundamental problems that has not been corrected over the years. The Wheeler Analysis – an honest gage R&R study – deals with these problems and presents an alternative analysis of measurement system using the same measurement data, but classifies your measurement system in a better and more accurate way.
