Alingås Energi presents the lighting designers of Lights in Alingsås 2023

We are excited to announce the lighting designers for the upcoming Lights in Alingsås festival in 2023!

After receiving an overwhelming amount of interest, the selected group of lighting designers has finally arrived in Alingsås to prepare for the festival's 24th annual event. They were eager to get started as they attended the concept meeting over the weekend.

David Ghatan, one of the workshop heads, expressed his enthusiasm for working with students in a free and positive way to explore the creative possibilities of light. He was thrilled to finally be a part of the collaborative design process and create a new story with his colleagues in a new place.

Similarly, Linus Lopez shared his passion for light in all its forms and his admiration for the dialogues for learning and interaction generated by the Lights in Alingsås workshops.

During the weekend, the designers had the chance to walk along the lighting trail for the first time and select the locations to illuminate this autumn.

The theme for this year's festival was also introduced, adding to the excitement of the designers. The lighting trail's route and this year's theme will be revealed later in the spring, so stay tuned!

The lighting designers of Lights in Alingsås 2023

Lina Färje, based in Sweden
Lina Färje is a lighting designer who has been working in Sweden for the last 16 years, initially with Ljusarkitektur and then with Tyréns for the past 8 years. Currently, she is in the process of starting up her own lighting design business.
Lina has a strong interest in sustainable planning and building, and she has been involved in projects that focus on social justice, security, and recycling. For instance, she has worked on projects such as Uppsala City Theatre (which won the Guldstolen award in 2023), The Floating Bath, Blue Park in Gothenburg, and the Frizon project in Umeå.
In the past year, Lina has also participated in the interdisciplinary research project Nordark, led by KTH, which aims to design lighting with minimal impact on animal and wildlife.

In addition to her work in sustainable planning and building, Lina has also worked on lighting design for dance performances.
She has organized several workshops in Denmark and Brazil, where she has shared her experience and knowledge with students and young people. Lina finds the dynamics of a workshop situation to be particularly enjoyable, as it allows her to collaborate with students and work alongside them in the field. Overall, Lina is excited about the opportunity to work closely with students during her upcoming workshop, as she is eager to share her expertise and engage in hands-on work in the field with them.

David Ghatan, based in USA
David's passion for combining his interests in theatrical design, fine art, and architecture led him to pursue an internship in architectural lighting. It was during this time that he was introduced to Candy Kling, who became his mentor and showed him the world of lighting design. This experience ignited his love for light, and he has been following that path ever since. More than 24 years later David is running the same firm he interned with, the CM KLING + ASSOCIATES, as president.

For David, the creative process is a constant source of inspiration and energy. As he puts it, "In Architectural Lighting you get to work on many diverse and interesting projects all at the same time. There is an energy to it."
His impressive portfolio includes national and international projects in hospitality, corporate, residential, government, religious, and convention centers. In 2018, he was honored with the Lighting Design Awards for his outstanding work on the 2U Headquarters and American Greetings Headquarters.
David's leadership and expertise have also been recognized by his peers. He served as the IALD President from 2018-2019 and has held various roles on the Board, including President Elect, Treasurer, and Director-at-Large. Additionally, he remains active with the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (IESNA) on the Hospitality Committee.

Nick Dankers, based in the Netherlands
Nick Dankers is a conceptual lighting designer from Living Projects in Breda, the Netherlands. Ever since he was young, Nick has been captivated by the power of light. Starting with a humble LED home build kit, he has since gone on to design stunning landmarks, media facades, and historical buildings all throughout the Netherlands.
After spending countless hours traveling from theatre to theatre, Nick eventually specialized in creating extraordinary lighting designs for public spaces, events, and landmarks. Nowadays, he spends his days doing what he loves most: enhancing the beauty of the world around him through the art of lighting.

According to Nick, every project is unique in its own way, but they all share one thing in common: the ability to give people goosebumps. Whether it's a small church or a grand media facade, every project is special in its own right.
Nick is a regular guest speaker at The Lighting Design Academy and the Lighting Application Center of Signify. After participating as a workshop attendee at Lights in Alingsås in 2019, he knew he wanted to come back as a workshop leader. This year, his goal is to provide participants with a week full of learning opportunities in lighting design, controls, programming, mockups, and presentation. Most importantly, he wants to give them an unforgettable experience filled with fun, new friendships, and career-boosting insights.

Linus Lopez, based in India
After earning his Bachelor of Engineering (B.E.) degree in 1991, Linus began his career at Lirio Lopez Electrical Design Consultants. Over the years, he has worked on a diverse range of projects, including hospitals, Super Deluxe Hotels, Airport Hangars, Delhi Metro Stations, large scale housing communities, individual residences, and various commercial and entertainment projects. In 2000, the firm began offering architectural lighting design services, and with his subsequent Master's degree in Architectural Lighting and Design Management from Wismar, Linus has successfully designed and commissioned over a hundred architectural lighting design projects. As a result, Lirio Lopez Lighting Design Consultants is now one of the leading Architectural Lighting Design firms in the country, with several awarded projects.

Linus has also presented his work and research at various professional international conferences and lighting design events. He even anchored and moderated a 6-part video series called “Spread The Light” with STIR, which is available on YouTube. As a Professional Member of the International Association of Lighting Designers (IALD) and a member of the Working Committee for the formation of the Lighting Designers Association of India (LiDAI), Linus is committed to advancing the field of lighting design.
Linus is excited about the opportunity to be a Workshop Head because of his love for light in all its forms. He considers himself a lifelong student of the power of light and has been following the Lights in Alingsås workshops for some time now. He has seen the dialogues for learning and interaction that the workshops generate and wants to be a part of that.

Iris Molendijk and Sara Altelind, based in Sweden

Iris Molendijk
Iris is a passionate lighting designer who currently works for Helmet Experience Design in Stockholm, Sweden. While she started her career as an interior designer, she discovered her love for lighting design and has since honed her skills in a wide range of environments, from outdoor spaces to indoor exhibitions.

Not only is Iris an accomplished designer, but she also has a background as a research engineer, where she worked on projects related to light and health, luminous color, and Nordic after-dark environments. When asked about her favorite aspect of her profession, Iris cites the connecting power of light. Whether it's bringing people together during a workshop or highlighting the work of architects and interior designers in a project, Iris sees light as a unifying force.

At Helmet Experience Design, Iris and her team focus on creating atmospheric environments that inspire awe and wonder in their audiences. Her expertise has even earned her invitations to serve as a guest lecturer on lighting at the Jan des Bouvrie Academy in the Netherlands, a Bachelor in Interior Design.

Iris is truly passionate about her work and is particularly drawn to its ability to spark connections between people. This was evident in her experience during the Lights in Alingsås workshops of 2018 and 2019, which she found to be deeply rewarding.

Sara Altelind
It's not quite the beautiful story I wish I could tell - that I always knew I wanted to be a lighting designer. The truth is, though, that I've been brought up to appreciate the importance of light and darkness. From building snow lanterns to watching the northern lights, experiencing bright summer nights and the deep darkness of the forest, my parents and my home on the Höga Kusten have all played a role in shaping my passion for lighting.

Now, since 2022, I've been working as a lighting designer at PE Teknik & Arkitektur. My role as a consultant has given me valuable experience working on both interior and exterior projects. What I love about lighting design is how it can completely transform how we perceive a space - it's a game changer. And it keeps me constantly learning and growing.

“In 2015, I had the meaningful experience of being a student in the Lights in Alingsås workshop. Since then, I've always dreamed of being a workshop head, sharing my values of light with others. And this year, that dream is becoming a reality as I work alongside Iris on the team”, says Sara.
