Lights in Alingsås festival, finalist in the Darc Awards
Lights in Alingsås has gone further in the Darc Awards, the Oscars of the lighting design profession. This Swedish festival is entered in the category "Best Creative Events" and it is in good company, as San Francisco City Hall and Colosseum Lights Message from Italy are also competitors, as are some great entries from Greece and the UK too. The winner will be chosen in a voting process, which is starting now. It is only trained lighting designers who can vote.
- When the question came from mondo if we wanted to participate in the new category, ‘Best Creative Event’, we jumped at the chance. You can't win if you don't compete! We're keeping our fingers crossed that the lighting designers will vote for us in Alingsås, says Angelica Larsson, Event Manager at Lights in Alingsås.
The world-leading lighting magazine mondo arc is Lights in Alingsås’ new media partner, and it is this magazine which created the Darc Awards. According to them, the competition is a unique concept which aims to shine a light on global lighting design, but also to promote the magazine itself. Mondo arc has contact with over 1400 lighting designers who work all over the world. Many of them have participated in Lights in Alingsås workshops - both as students and as workshop leaders.
- We're quite a small festival if you compare us with other competitors. But we have a strong concept - lighting designers and students creating lighting installations from scratch as they work together outside, day and night, for one week. Everyone involved is forced to collaborate to solve problems – whether it’s negative group dynamics or bad weather. The creative process is put under great pressure, so you cannot take it for granted that results will always be good - even if they have been so far. In this way the Lights in Alingsås festival is a high-risk project, which I believe separates us from other competitors, continues Larsson.
Lights in Alingsås and the other finalists have been selected by a jury consisting of a row of prominent lighting designers including Brendan Keely, Ellen Gouldmy, Paule Constable, Than Tram, André Tammes and others. See the full list here: http://darcawards.com/architectural/judging/
If Lights in Alingsås wins, the whole team will travel from Sweden to the UK for the awards ceremony at MC Motors in London on 15 September 2016.
- Vote for us, we’re worth it, adds Angelica Larsson with a smile.

Lights in Alingsås 2016
This year's theme is The Enlightenment which is based on the UN's 17 global sustainable development goals, which in turn leaves their mark on the light trail.
- This year we hope that the light trail will fire interest in sustainability issues, which are so important to highlight. These questions are easily forgotten, just like certain places. We hope that visitors will realise that sustainability is about so much more than just the environment, says Margaretha Stenmark Workshop Manager. No efforts which work towards a better world are too small, she concludes.

Together they must decide how they want to interpret their part of this year's theme. This year we are turning a spotlight on the world's most pressing issues!
