Pressmeddelande -

The stipend winners are here!

This Friday, the 23th of September, the international students participating in Lights in Alingsås workshop, begin to arrivie to Alingsås. This year too, the Lights in Alingsås festival has been able to make its popular awards to twenty of the over 60 international students participating in the lighting workshop.

    - The Lights in Alingsås festival is a great opportunity to learn more about my passion, lighting. It is very unusual to have the chance to attend a lighting design event. In the last ten years is has become more common to see art, light and video installations - they have become more popular and act as tourist attraction. Here in Sweden however, the Lights in Alingsås festival has been running since 1999, says thirty-one year old Azael Ferrer from Spain.

The stipends cover registration fees, food and subsistence and make it possible for more students to come to the workshop in Alingsås, Sweden. Another of the international students to be awarded a stipend, and one who will soon be arriving in Alingsås, is 24-year-old Maria Manuela Bertola Estupinan from Brazil.

    - As there are going to be others professionals and students there, I hope to learn from their different visions of the same projects. I think the best thing about this workshop is going to be the contact with other lighting professionals from other areas and cultures, and to be immersed in the world of lighting, says Maria Manuela.

    - I often think that it is the students who come to us during the workshop week, with all their energy, international perspectives, joy and motivation, who are our major assets, says Angelica Larsson, Event Manager.

Over the years, more than 1,000 students have participated in workshop training, and many of them have returned to Alingsås in the role of workshop leaders at a later stage of their careers. In practice this means that a large number of the world's leading international lighting designers started their careers here.

    - I´ve heard from other people that the Lights in Alingsås festival provides opportunities both to young participants and to professionals. I also know that the workshop is pretty amazing. Another thing I learned from the internet was that the municipality of Alingsås supports, and has a big role in, the festival, says Maria Manuela.

     - These young people grow as individuals during the week, which is wonderful to see. They learn an enormous amount about lighting installations and the profession in general, but also meet people who may become friends for life. It’s heart-warming, concludes Angelica Larsson.

Lights in Alingsås theme 2016

This year's theme is The Enlightenment which is based on the UN's 17 global sustainable development goals, which in turn leaves their mark on the light trail.

     - This year we hope that the light trail will fire interest in sustainability issues, which are so important to highlight. These questions are easily forgotten, just like certain places. We hope that visitors will realise that sustainability is about so much more than just the environment, says Margaretha Stenmark Workshop Manager. No efforts which work towards a better world are too small, she concludes.

Lights in Alingsås festival runs from 30 September to 6 November, 2016.
