Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award 2011 – the announcement is getting closer!
Never before have so many candidates been nominated to the world’s largest prize for children’s and young adult literature. This year 175 candidates from 62 countries are nominated to the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award. The recipient or recipients will be announced on Tuesday March 29th at 13.00 CET.
The last Tuesday in March the world’s eyes turn towards Vimmerby in Sweden, the birthplace of Astrid Lindgren, where the recipient or recipients of the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award are announced. At 13.00 CET the chairman of the jury, Mr Larry Lempert, will make the recipient/recipients of 2011 public. The announcement will be broadcasted live to the world’s largest children’s book fair in Bologna, and can also be followed live on www.alma.se. The web broadcast begins approx. 12.50 CET.
Among the 175 nominees authors, illustrators, oral story tellers and those active in reading promotion are included. This year six new countries are represented among the candidates: Burkina Faso, Georiga, Maldives, North Korea, Pakistan and Singapore.

The previous recipients of the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award are: Kitty Crowther (Belgium, 2010), Tamer Institute for Community Education (Palestinian Territories, 2009), Sonya Hartnett (Australia, 2008), Banco del Libro (Venezuela, 2007), Katherine Paterson (USA, 2006), Ryôji Arai (Japan 2005), Philip Pullman (Great Britain, 2005), Lygia Bojunga (Brazil, 2004), Christine Nöstlinger (Austria, 2003) and Maurice Sendak (USA, 2003).

The Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award (ALMA) is the world's largest prize for children's and young adult literature. The award, which amounts to SEK 5 million, is awarded annually to a single recipient or to several. Authors, illustrators, oral storytellers and those active in reading promotion may be rewarded. The award is designed to promote interest in children's and young adult literature, and in children's rights, globally. An expert jury selects the winners from candidates nominated by institutions and organisations worldwide. The Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award is administered by the Swedish Arts Council.
