Boon Edam installs Special Constructed Doors in Markthal Rotterdam

Edam, October 1, 2014 - Today, Queen Máxima opens the brand new Markthal in Rotterdam. Just as other cities like Barcelona, Stockholm and Budapest, Rotterdam now also has an indoor market floor. A huge fresh market, focusing on the sale of fresh food and food-related products, which until now was not present in our country.

The 40 meter high, 11-storey market hall provides space for 96 fresh units. In the bottom two layers are 20 retail and catering premises. At both ends are tea gardens. From the 2nd till the 11th floor are 228 apartments with an area of ​​75m2 to 200 m2. Below the Market Hall is a parking garage with 1,200 parking spaces.

Statement of Rotterdam Architecture

The shape, the artwork on the inside and the height of the Markthal make this building an spectacle. The building is a new statement in the urban structure of Rotterdam, which is already characterized by a great diversity of icons from the reconstruction and urban renewal period combined with recent buildings of contemporary architecture. The combination of architectural styles is an excellent environment for the spectacular design of the Markthal.

Challenge for Royal Boon Edam

Royal Boon Edam has installed 4 Duotour revolving doors with integrated automatic sliding doors in the facade of the Markthal. This beautiful building has a front and back cable net facade that should be seen as a huge moving sail of a ship. To connect the cable net facade to the doors a special portal was installed around the revolving doors. The cable net facade can 'bend' approximately 700 mm inwards and outwards and therefore the portals are hinged. A solid connection between the doors and the portals was not possible. After much brainstorming and calculating Boon Edam has managed to create a special connector that neutralizes the movement of the facade to the revolving doors. This is achieved by flexible "bibs" between the doors and the wall, a specially designed construction for this project. Think of a bendy bus or tram with the joint mechanism in the middle.

Furthermore Boon Edam also installed 2 Circleslide automatic doors with two sets of curved sliding doors. These doors can be used as emergency exit.
