Unique shift in the Swedish design world – H&SP and Norrstigen acquire Bruno Mathsson International
In an unusual and significant transaction within Swedish design, Norrstigen, as the new majority owner together with H&SP, has acquired Bruno Mathsson International AB, thereby taking over one of Sweden's most influential design legacies.
Since the 1930s, Bruno Mathsson's iconic designs and the production of his furniture have been firmly rooted in Småland, where every piece is still manufactured according to the principles that defined Mathsson’s original vision. In an industry characterized by a rapid pace of change, this continuity has become a central part of the brand's identity.
The acquisition also marks the end of an important chapter of ownership. Henry Thelander began working for Bruno Mathsson in 1948 and, over time, came to serve as his éminence grise. Eventually, Henry Thelander became the owner of the companies, dedicating a lifelong commitment to preserving and developing the legacy of Bruno Mathsson. His sons, Bo Thelander and Dan Thelander, took over responsibility in the 1990s. Following their more than 40 years of dedication, it is now time to hand over the responsibility to new owners.
"It has been a privilege to steward Bruno Mathsson's legacy. Handing it over to new owners now feels both natural and reassuring, as we can see that they understand both the value and the responsibility inherent in this Swedish cultural heritage," say Bo Thelander and Dan Thelander.
With H&SP and Norrstigen, a new phase now begins. The focus is on strengthening the brand's international position, developing its digital presence, and deepening the relationship with a new generation of design enthusiasts—without compromising on quality, heritage, or craftsmanship.
"Bruno Mathsson holds a unique position in Swedish design history. For us, it is about managing a significant legacy with respect and a long-term perspective. Together with the company's management, we want to create the best conditions for these furniture icons to remain relevant for many generations to come," says Hampus Hellermark, co-founder of Norrstigen.
The craftsmanship stays in Småland, where it has always belonged. From there, we will now build further, with great humility toward the heritage and a strong ambition for the future," says incoming CEO Thomas Hagström. He and incoming CCO Marcus San Pedro become owners alongside Norrstigen.
In an era where design heritage is often reinterpreted rather than preserved, the takeover of Bruno Mathsson stands as a rare example of continuity—where the next chapter does not rewrite history, but builds upon it.
