ChromoGenics Takes the Lead in Climate-Smart Real Estate Technology
With climate-smart technology that significantly reduces energy consumption in buildings, Uppsala-based ChromoGenics has rapidly emerged as a key player in the green transition of the European Real Estate industry. With new ownership and growing international demand, the company is now poised to meet market needs and set a new standard for sustainable buildings.
The Solution the Real Estate Sector Needs – Now
According to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the building and real estate sector accounts for approximately 37 percent of global emissions related to energy use and material production. Achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 will require a fundamental transformation in how we design, develop, and manage buildings. Without bold action, emissions will remain high—or even increase—making the need for concrete climate solutions urgent. This is particularly critical in meeting the requirements of the EU’s sustainability directives and ESG framework (environmental, social, and governance).
This is where ChromoGenics positions itself as a key player—offering solutions that reduce both energy consumption and the climate impact of buildings.
“Continuing to build with dark-tinted glass, zip screens, and oversized cooling systems is not sustainable. Our technology saves energy, improves indoor comfort, and has up to 80 percent lower climate impact,” says Fredrik Fränding, CEO of ChromoGenics.
Energy-Efficient Production and Proven Technology
ChromoGenics’ dynamic foil, ConverLight® Dynamic, which regulates light and heat transmission in real time, is manufactured in Uppsala through an advanced and energy-efficient process. The production is optimized for low energy use and high resource efficiency—making it a climate-smart solution that contributes to a more sustainable built environment.
This type of technology has also gained increasing attention internationally. In the United States, for example, the Dynamic Glass Act has been introduced—a law that offers tax incentives of up to 30 percent for dynamic glazing solutions, aimed at accelerating the energy transition in the building sector.
Interest is also growing in Sweden. The National Board of Housing, Building and Planning (Boverket)—the Swedish authority responsible for sustainable construction—has chosen ChromoGenics as the supplier for its new headquarters. This is a significant endorsement of the technology’s reliability and climate benefits, even from a public-sector perspective.
Stability, Proof, and Confidence in the Future
Since 2021, the company has steadily built a robust and quality-assured operation. With its own sputtering facility for the production of thin films, ChromoGenics has secured full control over its production chain. Today, the company offers an ISO-tested product with repeatable and reliable performance.
“We deliver on time, with consistent high quality. That has helped rebuild trust—both internally and externally,” says Fredrik Fränding, CEO of ChromoGenics.
A New Chapter – With Long-Term Focus and Strong Ownership Support
Previously listed on the stock exchange, ChromoGenics is now fully owned by Färna Invest—a Swedish, family-owned investment firm with a long-term focus on energy, technology, and industry. According to the company, this change has created stronger conditions for long-term growth, operational stability, and a sharpened focus on the core business.
“As a small company, partly owned by thousands of individual shareholders, we were forced to allocate significant resources to stock market compliance and administration. Today, we can fully focus on our product, our customers, and our growth,” says Fredrik Fränding.
Behind Färna Invest stands Gerald Engström, founder of the ventilation company Systemair—a global industrial group with operations in over 50 countries.
“I appreciated the technology in ChromoGenics’ products and recognized its strong potential. It is exactly the right solution for this time—enabling energy savings and the possibility to build net-zero energy buildings,” says Gerald Engström.
He also emphasizes the importance of market confidence in the company’s ability to meet increasing demand:
“I believe it is crucial that consultants and developers have confidence in the company’s ability to deliver and manage the expansion ahead—without new share issues or financial obstacles.”
This view is shared by CEO Fredrik Fränding, who underlines that stability and reliability are essential in a sector where many companies have struggled to meet expectations:
“We understand that some people feel uncertain. There have been players in our industry who did not live up to expectations—and several have disappeared. We are still here—and we are strong. Our customers can feel confident that we will be here tomorrow, too,” he says.
Strong Partnerships and International Recognition
The growing confidence in ChromoGenics and its dynamic glass solutions has led to increased interest and several large-scale projects across Sweden and Europe. The company has established partnerships with leading industry players—among them NSG Pilkington, one of the world’s largest glass manufacturers. After extensive testing, ConverLight® Dynamic has been qualified for inclusion in their product portfolio.
“Having a global player like Pilkington choose ConverLight® Dynamic is a strong vote of confidence,” says Fredrik Fränding, CEO of ChromoGenics. “Especially since they are extremely selective about which solutions they promote as their own, with very high standards for quality and performance. We’re in a strong position, but the challenge now is to scale in line with demand—while maintaining full focus on quality, solid partnerships, and reliable delivery.”
Building a New Standard for Climate-Smart Real Estate
ChromoGenics’ ambition is to be more than just a supplier of new building technologies—the company aims to actively contribute to redefining the standards for how the buildings of the future are planned and realized.
“More and more players in the construction and property sectors are now taking the step to explore new technologies to reduce climate impact and challenge traditional practices. Our vision is for ConverLight® Dynamic to become a natural part of tomorrow’s sustainable buildings—both in Sweden and internationally,” says Fredrik Fränding.
“We have the technology. We have the expertise. And together with our partners, we are setting a new standard for the sustainable buildings of tomorrow." says Fredrik Fränding.
