The world's most covered song is celebrated today on April 11th - the official ‘International Louie Louie Day’
‘Louie Louie’ by Richard Berry could claim the title as the world’s most covered rock song. With over 2000 recorded covers, samples and uncountable live performances of the tune it has made its way into Rock’n’Roll history. It is an example of where a cover of a song has succeeded its original's popularity as it is the Kingsmen's version of ‘Louie Louie’ that might be best known to the masses, but the impact of Berry’s original composition must not be understated. The official ‘International Louie Louie Day’ is celebrated today, on April 11th - Richard Berry’s birthday.
‘Louie Louie’ has been covered by music legends such as Motörhead, Iggy Pop, Patti Smith, The Beach Boys, Otis Redding and Bruce Springsteen. Berry wrote the song in 1955 (released it in 1957), inspired by an R&B interpretation of “El Loco Cha Cha” and his local bartender named Louie. The song has been included in Rock’n’Roll Hall of Fame, Grammy Hall of Fame, been named as one of the “500 Greatest songs of all time” by Rolling Stones Magazine and almost became the official state song of Washington. The cultural significance of the song and its impact on modern day Rock’n’Roll is undeniable with its joyfully simple, yet infectious and anthemic chorus.
Adding to this year’s celebrations of ‘International Louie Louie Day’, Ace Records is releasing a brand new version of the original master, with an extended edit of that instantly recognizable, much loved and historically legendary opening riff.
