Movie The Monuments Men and the Czech treasure - Vyšebrodský altar

New movie “Památkáři” (The Monuments Men) directed by George Clooney is telling the true story of brave men who are under the fire of the German army. They risk their lives to protect the greatest treasures of mankind! 

One of the treasures that they attempt to rescue is the Vyšebrodský  altar. Vyšebrodský cycle of nine panel paintings from the mid-14th century devoted to the topic of the life of Jesus Christ is one of the most important works of the Czech Gothic painting. During World War II, the cycle came into the hands of the Nazis and had to be destroyed. Fortunately, cycle was rescued by military specialists and after the war could be brought back to Czechoslovakia. This extraordinary work is now on display in the monastery of St. Anežka Česká as part of the permanent exhibition of the National Gallery in Prague.
