A living museum of tapestries in Valašské Meziříčí
There are only a few preserved workshops in Europe, where hand-made tapestries are still weaved. In the living museum, you
can experience the process of making tapestries and carpets from art designs to
a monumental result of work lasting for months. During a one-hour tour, you
will have a unique opportunity to see the secrets of the craft which takes the
weavers about 15 years to master. The excursion ends in a gallery where you can
see a selection of woven works. The museum belongs to the Moravian Tapestry
Manufactory which has been in operation since 1993 and it continues in a
one-hundred-year-old tradition of weaving tapestries in Valašské Meziříčí.
Every tapestry or carpet is based on a work of art. In the past twenty years, monumental tapestries inspired by leading Czech visual artists have been made in the MGM Actual Textile Art project. Carpets are also designed by visual artists as parts of a specific interior. Textile works, which were made in the MGM, are regularly exhibited in the Czech Republic and abroad and they decorate private, as well as representative interiors.
If you are inspired by the creative spirit of the workshops, you can participate in a week-long weaving course where you learn basic skills and create your own carpet. There is also a nice café designed in the style of the turn of the 19th century with regular concerts, author readings and other cultural events.
You can find attractive areas for tourists like a Renaissance square and the Hat Museum in Nový Jičín, a picturesque town of Štramberk, you can see natural beauties of the Beskydy Mountains when you set off to Pustevny or the Wallachian Open Air Museum in Rožnov pod Radhoštěm.
