Eight Tips for Places to Go with Children in the Czech Republic
The Czech Republic is an ideal place for a family vacation. While adults can enjoy the charm of historic towns and the unmistakable taste of Czech beer, children will also have the pleasure of a unique experience in the heart of Europe. Explore eight places in the Czech Republic, which are primarily intended for children, but also offer amusement and learning to adults.
Experience the past in adventure parks
Visit two historical adventure parks to learn about and experience firsthand how our ancestors lived. The Botanicus center for arts and crafts and herbal gardens in Ostrá in Central Bohemia keep alive the old crafts that are slowly disappearing from everyday life. While strolling the streets of an old Czech village, you will discover the work of tinkers, candle-makers, blacksmiths and potters and will even be able to try making something yourself. You can also visit the herbal gardens created for the cultivation of ingredients and the relaxation of visitors.
Zeměráj adventure park, which lies about 35 kilometers from the southern Bohemian city of Tábor allows you to go back in time to learn about rural life in the Czech lands in the early Middle Ages. Children can also walk barefoot along the specially created kilometer-long trail, hunt for treasure on an archaeological site and find their way out of a forest rope maze. There are also refreshments and theater programs imitating life in the Middle Ages. Both adventure parks are open from May to late September.
Learn science by playing in Pilsen and Liberec
Do you want your kids to learn something and not get bored in the process? Venture into the Techmania Science Center interactive museum in Pilsen. The exhibits answer questions such as what happens to you when you "receive" 200,000 volts or how quickly a thief can unlock your safe. You can visit Edutorium, with its more than 60 interactive exhibits; Water World, which is dedicated to the power and use of the element of water; the "Figure it out!” exhibition, with its thirty puzzles; and Top Secret, a world of spies. Techmania Science Center also houses a high-tech 3D planetarium.
Science and Technology is also popularized by the iQlandia science center in the north Bohemian city of Liberec. The center houses several exhibitions dedicated to the world around us, the human body and nanotechnology. Worthy of special attention is Thespian, a humanoid robot – the only one of its kind in the country – which can move and speaks four languages. In addition to touring the exhibitions, you can also take part in a forty-minute science show or try the hurricane and earthquake simulator.
Pay a visit to the animals
Animal lovers will also be satisfied in the Czech Republic. Prague Zoo, which was chosen by visitors of the TripAdvisor portal in 2014 as the seventh most popular zoo in the world, is one Europe's leading breeding centers. You will find 12 pavilions there with over 150 exhibits, which are home to over 650 species of animals. Velemlokárium (the Chinese Giant Salamander House), home to the largest amphibian in the world, is definitely worth a visit. Impressed tortoises, which you will not see in any other European zoo, "live" together with them.
If you go to Moravia, visit Zlín Zoo. You can travel around the world in a single day: the garden is divided up by continent, and the individual exhibitions introduce visitors to 222 species of animals. Zátoka rejnoků (the Bay of Rays) is especially unique. Not only do you get to see the cartilaginous fish the exhibit is named after, you can also feed them and touch them. After a day full of adventure, you can relax while visiting Lešná Chateau, which lies on the zoo premises, or have a picnic in the vast chateau park.
Have fun in the water in Prague and South Moravia
A paradise for fun in the water is Aqualand Moravia, located in south Moravian town of Pasohlávky, near Brno. Twelve swimming pools, twenty slides, the Forum Romanum wellness area and many other attractions await you within the Roman baths-inspired waterpark. In Aqualand Moravia, you can even swim in the outdoor pool in winter, as it is supplied with water from a geothermal source with a constant temperature of 33 degrees.
The largest water park in Central Europe is located in Prague. Adrenaline experiences with eight slides of up to 140 meters long and a raging river await you in Aquapalace Praha-Čestlice. The little ones can enjoy a pirate ship with slides and a swimming pool with artificial waves. For those worn out by all the adventure, there is a relaxation zone with whirlpools, massage tables and comfortable chairs. You will also find Sauna World there, including spa and wellness services.
