Enjoy a magical adventure at Pernštejn Castle

Norwegian film crews are busy working at Pernštejn Castle in the Czech Republic shooting a popular Christmas fantasy which draws Norwegian families to the screen every year. Visit Pernštejn Castle and see for yourselves why it has been selected as a film setting. Just two hours away from Prague you can experience your own adventure at this magical castle.

The mysterious atmosphere of Pernštejn Castle has been attracting Czech and foreign film crews for many years. The Castle has featured in more than 40 fairy tales and films. Visit Pernštejn and you can follow the trails of your favourite heroes featuring in American films such as Good King Wenceslas, Van Helsing, The Adventures of Young Indiana Jones, the French film The Three Musketeers, the Russian film Aleksandr Nevskij or the Canadian film Joan of Arc.

Pernštejn Castle majestically occupies the top of the rock overlooking the small town of Nedvědice. It is mostly thanks to its location that it has never been conquered in its 800 year history. Your tour of the castle, which is built from marble, will take you several centuries back in time to a world of beautiful princesses, duelling knights and dangerous bandits.

If you look carefully inside the narrow corridors of the castle you will be able to find medieval inscriptions. You might even be able to recognise famous quotations from classical authors which the lords of the castle borrowed to express their own thoughts. Words such as love and life can be easily identified among these inscriptions. It is down to your fantasy to decide whether the author of these inscriptions was a brave knight or an unhappy princess.

If you spend enough time in its ancient walls you might even encounter the ghostly White Lady of Pernštejn. A legend also tells of the ghost of a vain maid who spent all her time looking into the mirror instead of going to the church. According to the legend whoever looks into a mirror at Pernštejn is said to lose their beauty within a year´s time.

Pernštejn Castle is two hours away from Prague. The Castle offers guided tours in foreign languages which may include a programme comprising of period dances, music, fencing or crafts. At the Castle courtyard you can buy fresh produce from local farmers or hand-made gifts. Pernštejn Castle is in the area of Bystřicko. In 2010 the European Commission awarded this area the title of EDEN - European Destination of ExcelleNce.
