Go on a wine trip to the Czech Republic
When it comes to wine trips, the Czech Republic is an obvious holiday destination. The central European country offers exciting wine experiences in combination with fresh air, cycling trips and historic castles - not to mention a great number of award-winning wines. And then there are the special Czech wine harvest with jousting and horseshoe roll - an outstanding experience.
Whether you are a true wine connoisseur or just think it's exciting to try a new wine destination and know something about the glass of wine you drink on a Friday night, there are plenty of experiences for you in the Czech Republic.
By bike between grapevines
In the Czech Republic there are a wide range of worth-seeing cycling routes in and out between vineyards and villages and lures with a relaxing bike ride between the grapevines. The impressive network of cycle routes in a welcoming terrain makes it possible to cycle from vineyard to vineyard - for sometimes taking a well-earned rest with a good glass of Pinot Gris.
Especially southern Moravia is ideal for exploring new places and beautiful scenery from the saddle and to visit the wine cellars and discover historical monuments.
The Lednice-Valtice wine cellar
The Lednice-Valtice complex is an impressive castle complex
between the towns of Lednice and Valtice in the south-eastern Czech Republic.
As part of the complex, which since 1996 has been on the UNESCO World Heritage
Site, you wil find the very nice wine salon. Here you can taste the 100 best
wines from the Czech Republic. The wines are all awarded in the country's
largest and most important wine competition.
In addition to the castle complex’s beauty and size it is known for its long
wine making tradition. You will feel the history here, and there are not many
better places than here, where the Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius chose to grow
his grapevindes, because he thought the area invited to it.
Award-winning wine
The Czech Republic is rarely the first country to connect with international award winning wine, but the country has recently achieved many great results in prestigious competitions. At the first edition of the competition Concours International des Vins de Terroir, in Brignoles in France, attended three Czech wines, and they all won silver medals, while it became a Gold Medal at The Michelangelo CCL Label International Wine Awards of South Africa.
Vintage in late summer
Early September is the best time if you want to get close to the traditional Czech grape harvest. You can, for example - in addition to taste a lot of interesting wine - experience the historic markets, jousting and dancing and music, while children can participate in throwing competition with horseshoes.
Every year in September, during the Palava Vintage Festival in the south-Moravian city Mikulov, there are both culinary and cultural experiences and events for the wine lovers. Later in the harvest season, you can visit Znojmo Historical Vintage, where you can taste the young and exuberant wine speciality Burčák.
