The Salvation Army Takes Charity “Mobile” with its Social Justice App in Partnership with GetJar and DIDMO

App will engage the world’s ‘mobile generation’ in the fight for social justice

Atlanta, GA., San Mateo, Calif., and Stockholm, Sweden – December 15, 2010 – The Salvation Army, Southern Territory, GetJar, the world’s largest open app store and DIDMO, creators of the award-winning Magmito mobile application creation solution have joined forces to inform, educate, and engage a global mobile audience about the issues of social justice for teens and young adults. The free Daily Cup mobile app will help address important social justice issues such as hunger, homelessness, HIV/AIDS, human trafficking, and natural disasters through building awareness and encouraging donations of both time and money from the younger, mobile demographic.

“The Salvation Army is committed to being a voice for the world’s poor and oppressed -- for human injustice, and our latest effort to spread this important message is aimed at today’s mobile generation,” said C. Mark Brown, Major, Community Relations and Development Secretary, The Salvation Army USA Southern Territory. “Mobile is international, has mass viral appeal and with Magmito, can be accessed by virtually any phone on the market, making it the ideal platform through which to attract young people, whether it’s through volunteering their time at a local Salvation Army or making an instant donation of just $10 via their mobile device. With GetJar as the exclusive app store distributor, we hope to reach millions across over 200 countries for all major platforms this holiday season.”

The Daily Cup app features a blog feed, regularly updated with news not commonly found on most other media about donations at work, globally, via The Salvation Army. In addition, the app highlights important information on social justice including sobering statistics and content on human trafficking, hunger, homelessness, disaster, and HIV/AIDS, to name a few.  Participation among those who download is encouraged via a feedback form for volunteer inquiries and donation options including a special “Donate $10 now” button. Created by DIDMO using its cross-platform Magmito mobile app creation software, the app will be exclusively distributed via GetJar through premium listings and promotions on their website, which has received over 1B downloads in more than 200 countries to millions of mobile users.

“Our joint objective is to support The Salvation Army in ‘doing the most good’ by giving today’s youth the opportunity to affect change,” said Patrick Mork, CMO, GetJar. “We’re pleased to have the opportunity, together with DIDMO, to contribute our technologies and services to support this first-of-its-kind initiative and hope it ignites a world interest and effort to support those impacted by social injustice on behalf of The Salvation Army.”

How it works:
1. Download the Daily Cup app by visiting m.getjar.com and searching for the app or simply insert this link: http://getjar.com/Salvation-Army into your mobile phone web browser.  Alternatively, you can also click on the “App it! on GetJar” button or scan the custom QR Code with your mobile camera phone. For those phones without QR Code readers installed, simply type: didmo.com/qr into your browser to download a reader.
2. Follow the download instructions that appear on the screen to download the app directly to your phone or, for iPhone users, visit the enhanced Web version of the app.
3. Browse the app to learn about The Salvation Army’s mission and work in the areas of social justice, to volunteer your time at your local Salvation Army, or to make a donation.  Don’t forget to check back often for updates on the direct impact your donations are making in the fight for social justice.

“The Internet and now, social media have given rise to a culture of content immediacy, where adding a mobile app to the mix provides a constant, 24/7 reminder on a device young adults never leave home without,” said Angelo Biasi, VP Business Development, DIDMO. “We hope that during this season of giving, we can mobilize a new global audience of wireless users to learn, get informed and participate with The Salvation Army in making a difference.”
