Designer Maxjenny mixes 18th Century with modern-day in new exhibition

19 September sees the opening of the fashion exhibition Maxjenny! – The Queen of Prints at Drottningholms Slottsteater. Inspired by motifs from the theatre’s unique 18th century environment, innovative designer Maxjenny Forslund has created a collection of print garments that straddles both art and fashion. Her creations will be on display until 11 October. Entrance to the exhibition is free.

After this summer’s cancelled performances, the Maxjenny! – The Queen of Prints exhibition is this year’s big opportunity for large numbers of visitors to experience Drottningholms Slottsteater. The theatre is over 250 years old and boasts a priceless collection of furnishings, decor and artefacts. Maxjenny has used images of this and with her avant-garde touch created something entirely new and very much her own.

The collection comprises nine different prints. In the stands, the original pictures have been manipulated and changed, but the rococo theatre’s dusty colours are recognisable and coexist with monochrome motifs in a more contemporary graphical tradition and with an unmistakable nod to designer Piero Fornasetti. The completed prints have then been sewn up in the garment collection, upon which the entire exhibition is based.

“Drottningholms Slottsteater has completely wonderful spaces with architecture and an attention to detail rarely seen today,” says Maxjenny Forslund. “When I started working with the patterns, twisting and turning the pictures and working on the colours, it was as if the environments detached themselves from history to reveal their true selves. Just brilliant.”

“Maxjenny’s passion for our cultural heritage and her wonderful creations that are nothing short of contemporary rococo was what made me invite her to take part in this creative collaboration,” says artistic and managing director Sofi Lerström.

Maxjenny Forslund is a Swedish fashion designer based in Copenhagen. With her brand maxjenny! she is one of Scandinavia’s most innovative fashion and print designers. Working in the interface between art and design, she has had the privilege of dressing Madonna for one of her music videos and Crown Princess Victoria on numerous international royal occasions.

Drottningholms Slottsteater has witnessed the changing face of fashion since 1766. It is a unique historical theatre that has remained unaltered since it was first built. The exhibition of designs by maxjenny! will be arranged in the Déjeuner Salon, formerly King Gustav III’s breakfast room and now the theatre’s foyer, with its windows and doors opening out onto the palace grounds and royal park.

Därefter föll teaterbyggnaden i glömska.
