Acoustics and sustainable indoor environments

This year’s main event for acousticians:

Acoustics and sustainable indoor environments

Ecophon International Acoustician’s Seminar (EIAS) is rapidly approaching. On September 30, some 200 experts on room acoustics and others with an interest in how sound affects people will meet up at Hotel Skansen in Båstad. It is one of few events worldwide completely dedicated to room acoustics. The cream of the crop from all over the world will attend to discuss how we may achieve better room acoustic comfort. There will be speakers from some 11 different countries. Acoustics affects us all in everyday life, it is a proven factor in office performance, it is of vital importance in schools and has impact on the outcome of the care given in hospitals. There is a lot of evidence based research available, yet a lot remains to be done.

Many times today room acoustics become a factor late in the building process, or in some cases, never at all. Putting acoustics on the agenda and making it part of the building process earlier on would lead to more efficient office workers, better educated children and allow patients a better care. Good room acoustic comfort adds a competitive advantage to any company.

35 speakers will lecture, discuss and share the latest research. Architect Jens Guldbaek has an insightful story on the world renowned Hellerup school outside Copenhagen. At EIAS he will provide a holistic overview and discuss how some architects design the sound environment more than others.

Richard Francis from The Monomoy Company will have a look at how companies can make a business case for better interior environments. The role of buildings is predicted to be the next big thing on the sustainability agenda. Richard chairs the Environmental Sustainability Group of the British Council for Offices and he recently appeared as a keynote speaker at the House of Lords.

Another speaker is Environment Psychologist Dr. Nigel Oseland who has worked with many corporate and public sector organisations developing their workplace strategies, standards and processes. What signifies an acoustically good work environment depends on who is working there and the type of work that is beeing done.

Room acoustics will be discussed from different angles; there will be physicists, architechts, engineers, logopedics, change managers, environmental psychologists and people from many other lines of work. Many times real progress is achieved when findings from many different areas of research are combined. And that is exactly what EIAS 2015 is all about. Sharing knowledge and creating a better sounding indoor environment.
