Eline Chair - Design Claesson Koivisto Rune

Med en till synes omöjligt tunn silhuett och lätthet, ger arbetsstolen Eline komfort för ett aktivt och långt sittande. Genom att ta alla parametrar till sin spets har en behaglig svikt och flexibilitet i det formpressade sittskalet uppnåtts, trots att material och detaljer i konstruktionen reducerats till ett absolut minimum. Med olika stativ och utföranden i färg är Eline en harmonisk balansakt mellan teknik och form.

“Vi ville göra en så tunn och lätt arbetsstol som möjligt, befriad från en massa spakar och vred, men utan att kompromissa i själva komforten. För att få sittskalet tunt och medgörligt utan att den riskerar att knäckas, konstruerade vi en vagga. Den fungerar som en distans till underredet, vilken håller fast den formpressade träsittsen exakt så mycket att den ger ett behagligt flexande i både sitts och rygg. Minsta ändring i materialens dimensioner och komponenternas vinklar, påverkar förhållandena, och samtidigt ska givetvis sittvinkeln och höjden på armstöd vara rätt för ergonomi och estetiskt uttryck. Tillsammans med Edsbyn känns det som om vi verkligen tagit det här konceptet till gränsen för vad som är tekniskt möjligt.

Den här stolen såg annorlunda ut när vi började, men efter att vi gradvis har kunnat reducera material så har den fått ett annat uttryck. Det är med andra ord inte en stol man skissar fram, den har fått sin design genom många digitala och fysiska tester för att pröva hållfastheten. Flygplan får sin form efter aerodynamikens förutsättningar men kan samtidigt vara väldigt vackra. Möbler har också en tradition av att bli vackra som ett resultat av sina tekniska förutsättningar, och i dessa fall kan man säga att, funktion skapar form, på absolut bästa sätt.” - Claesson Koivisto Rune

Claesson Koivisto Rune är ett arkitekt- och designkontor som grundades i Stockholm 1995 av Mårten Claesson, Eero Koivisto och Ola Rune. De var det första Svenska kontoret att ställa ut i den internationella avdelningen på arkitekturbiennalen i Venedig (2004) och med projekt som kulturhuset Sfera (2003) i Kyoto (JP), och inde/jacobs Gallery (2015) i Marfa (US), är kontoret ett av Sveriges internationellt mest uppmärksammade. Flera av deras möbler och produkter finns i samlingar som Art Institute Chicago, Indianapolis Museum of Art, USA, och Nationalmuseum – Sveriges konst och designmuseum. År 2021 mottog Claesson Koivisto Rune Prins Eugen-medaljen av Sveriges Kung Carl XVI Gustaf, för framstående konstnärlig gärning inom arkitektur.

With a seemingly impossible slim silhouette and lightness, the task chair Eline offers a comfortable seat for an active and long use. Despite the fact that materials and details in the construction have been reduced to an absolute minimum, and all other parameters taken to its limits, a pleasant flex in the form-pressed seat shell has been achieved. With different leg frames and choice of colours, Eline constitutes a harmonic balancing act between technique and form.

“We wanted to make the thinnest and lightest task chair possible, free from all the levers and controls, but without having to compromise with the comfort. In order to make the seat flexible without breaking, we constructed a cradle. It works as a buffer against the leg frame, which fixates the seating shell just enough to give a pleasant flex in both the back and seat. The slightest change in the dimensions of the materials or angel of the components, affects the dynamics. At the same time the seating angel and height of the armrests have to be just right for ergonomics and aesthetic expression. Together with Edsbyn we feel that we really have taken this concept to the limit of what is technically possible.

This chair looked different when we started, but as we gradually reduced the materials, it received another expression. In other words, this is not a chair that you realise through sketches, it has been designed through the many digital and physical tests that measures durability. The shapes on an airplane are determined by the conditions of aerodynamics but can still be very beautiful. Furniture also have a tradition of becoming beautiful as a result of their technical conditions. You could say that in these cases, function creates form, in the best possible way.” - Claesson Koivisto Rune

Claesson Koivisto Rune is an architect- and design office founded in Stockholm in 1995 by Mårten Claesson, Eero Koivisto och Ola Rune. They were the first Swedish office to exhibit at the international section of the Venice Architecture Biennale (2004) and with projects such as the culture house Sfera (2003) in Kyoto (JP), and inde/jacobs Gallery (2015) in Marfa (US), the office is one of Sweden’s internationally most recognised. Several of their furniture and products are in collections such as Art Institute Chicago, Indianapolis Museum of Art, USA, and Nationalmuseum – Sweden’s Museum of Art and Design. In 2021 the king of Sweden Carl XVI Gustaf, presented Claesson Koivisto Rune with the Prince Eugen Medal for outstanding artistic achievement in architecture.
