Reform Shelf system - Design Claesson Koivisto Rune

De vackra rutnäten i skyskrapornas fasader har gett inspiration till Reform, ett nytt hyllsystem som utmanar din kreativitet. Reform består av en kub och ett rätblock som man kan bygga till i alla riktningar på väggen eller fristående på golvet med öppen eller stängd baksida. Gjord i Edsbyn helt av spillmaterial som samlas ihop från produktionen av olika möbelkollektioner, är detta en smart och cirkulär produkt som får nytt liv med varje användare och varje rum.

“Edsbyn har en historia av att tillverka förvaringar, och vi ville modernisera det med ett hyllsystem beståendes av två enheter i olika format som man kan bygga till i alla riktningar på väggen eller som en fristående möbel på golvet. Helt tillverkad av spillmaterial som samlas ihop från produktionen av Edsbyns olika möbelkollektioner, är det här en cirkulär produkt som kan skickas platt och även återvinnas. Den här typen av möbel har många föregångare så utmaningen var att hitta ett unikt uttryck. Stommen med sina rätvinkliga hörn är själva möbeln, men genom att dra in sidorna både fram och bak, accentuerar man relationen mellan de horisontala och vertikala linjerna så att de två enheterna i kombination kan bilda vackra rutnät.

Det hade varit enkelt att bara göra en kvadrat, och vi lekte med idén om olika beslag. Men precis som i den amerikanska konstnären Donald Judds geometriska verk är proportionerna allt. Det är en balansgång mellan anonymitet och precis rätt mängd av designinnehåll så att möbeln fungerar när den repeteras och den enskilda beståndsdelen inte tar över. Vi återvände till en konstserie vi gjorde som heter Faciem (2019), där vi analyserade olika fasader på skyskrapor för att utröna varför en viss proportion är så mycket vackrare än en annan. En av dessa var Bibliothéque Francois-Mitterand (1996) i Paris, ritad av Dominique Perrault, vilken inspirerade oss till att göra en bokhylla i ett unikt exemplar, och denna kan sägas utgöra grunden för den form vi slutligen landade i för Reform.” - Claesson Koivisto Rune

Claesson Koivisto Rune är ett arkitekt- och designkontor som grundades i Stockholm 1995 av Mårten Claesson, Eero Koivisto och Ola Rune. De var det första Svenska kontoret att ställa ut i den internationella avdelningen på arkitekturbiennalen i Venedig (2004) och med projekt som kulturhuset Sfera (2003) i Kyoto (JP), och inde/jacobs Gallery (2015) i Marfa (US), är kontoret ett av Sveriges internationellt mest uppmärksammade. Flera av deras möbler och produkter finns i samlingar som Art Institute Chicago, Indianapolis Museum of Art, USA, och Nationalmuseum – Sveriges konst och designmuseum. År 2021 mottog Claesson Koivisto Rune Prins Eugen-medaljen av Sveriges Kung Carl XVI Gustaf, för framstående konstnärlig gärning inom arkitektur.

The beautiful grid in the facades of skyscrapers have given inspiration to Reform, a new shelf system that challenges your creativity. Reform consists of a cube and a rectangular block that can be combined freely on a wall or built as a free standing furniture on the floor, with an open or closed backside. Made in Edsbyn out of leftover material that are collected from the production of different furniture collections, this is a smart and circular product that will gain new life with every user and every room.

“Edsbyn has a history of making storages, and we wanted to modernise it with a shelf system that consists of two units in different sizes that you can add-on in different directions on a wall, or built as a free standing furniture on the floor. Made out of leftover material that are collected from the production of its different furniture collections, this is a circular product that can be shipped flat pack and be recycled. This type of furniture have many predecessors, so the challenge has been to find a unique expression. The unit with its right angled corners is the actual furniture, but by retracting the sides at the front and back, you accentuate the relation between the horisontal and vertical lines which makes the two units in combination form beautiful grids.

It would have been easy to just make a square, and we played with an idea about different fittings. But just as in the American artist Donald Judd’s geometric works, the proportions are everything. To make a furniture work when it is put in sequence, and not let the individual component take over, is a matter of balance between anonymity and just the right amount of design. We revisited a series of art prints we did called Faciem (2019), where we analysed the different facades of skyscrapers to try and assess why a certain proportion is more beautiful than another. One of these was Bibliothéque Francois-Mitterand (1996) in Paris, designed by Dominique Perrault. This grid inspired us to make a bookshelf in an edition of one, and you could say that this furniture is the foundation for the shape that we finally decided upon for Reform.“ - Claesson Koivisto Rune

Claesson Koivisto Rune is an architect- and design office founded in Stockholm in 1995 by Mårten Claesson, Eero Koivisto och Ola Rune. They were the first Swedish office to exhibit at the international section of the Venice Architecture Biennale (2004) and with projects such as the culture house Sfera (2003) in Kyoto (JP), and inde/jacobs Gallery (2015) in Marfa (US), the office is one of Sweden’s internationally most recognised. Several of their furniture and products are in collections such as Art Institute Chicago, Indianapolis Museum of Art, USA, and Nationalmuseum – Sweden’s Museum of Art and Design. In 2021 the king of Sweden Carl XVI Gustaf, presented Claesson Koivisto Rune with the Prince Eugen Medal for outstanding artistic achievement in architecture.
