International Transportation Service partners with Elonroad on zero emissions at the Port of Long Beach
Elonroad, a pioneer in innovative charging solutions for heavy-duty vehicle charging, has been selected by International Transportation Service LLC (ITS) at the Port of Long Beach (POLB) in California, to provide dynamic and stationary charging solutions as part of ITS's green transition efforts. This project initiative, funded by California Energy Commission (CEC) and ITS, supports ITS’ and POLB’s goal in achieving zero emissions for its cargo handling equipment (CHE) fleet by 2030 aligned with the Clean Air Action Plan adopted by the POLB in 2007.
Elonroad, known for its innovative conductive charging solutions that enable efficient charging for electric vehicles in motion or standing still, will install a 360-meter electric road for dynamic charging, capable of delivering 250 kW of charging power. Five 50kW stationary charging stations will be installed as a complement to the electric road. ITS is exploring these solutions as part of its broader commitment to decarbonizing port operations.
The static and dynamic charging setup in the project will power five Terberg terminal tractors equipped with Elonroad’s energy collector and will undergo a 12-month demonstration period collecting useful performance data as part of the CEC-sponsored project. The demonstration is scheduled to begin in Q3 2025, the data and lessons learned will help to inform and determine the feasibility of a wider implementation of hands-free charging technology in a marine terminal environment.
Karin Ebbinghaus, CEO of Elonroad, shared her excitement about the collaboration: "The partnership with ITS is a fantastic opportunity to demonstrate the advantages our technology brings to the electrification of heavy vehicles, especially in a demanding environment like a port. The ability to maintain high uptime while managing harsh conditions, coupled with our ability to spread charging more evenly throughout the day, makes our solution ideal for port operations."
A spokesperson from ITS highlighted the importance of this partnership: "Our goal is to ensure that we achieve zero emissions while maintaining operational efficiency, and Elonroad’s charging solutions offer us a promising way to balance both. The combination of dynamic and stationary charging provides flexibility and reliability, which are essential for our operations at the port.” says Halfdan Ross, Chief Project Officer. The Port of Long Beach, as a critical economic and environmental region, plays a vital role in the efforts to reduce emissions. The USD 4.5 million project is largely funded by the California Energy Commission’s Clean Transportation Program. The successful deployment of Elonroad’s innovative charging technology could lead to significant emissions reductions and improved operational efficiencies at ports, supporting California’s climate change policies, reduce California’s use and dependence on petroleum transportation fuels and increase the use of zero emission advanced vehicle technologies.
