Richard Tinning is one of the two appointed honorary doctors. The title is "The centrality of pedagogy to the field of human movement studies". Welcome to his lecture!
Pedagogy can be thought of as the study of how knowledge is produced and reproduced. In the case of our field (Human Movement Studies/Sport Science) the knowledge is essentially about physical activity/exercise, the body and health.
Importantly, however, knowledge about bodies, physical activity, and health is no longer (not that it ever was) the sole preserve of our field. Other powerful cultural players have vested interests in this knowledge and to this extent our field has ‘competition’ to stay relevant in the modern university context and beyond.
This lecture presents a case for pedagogy as being central to the broader field of human movement studies/sport science and offers integrative pedagogies as a process to better represent the unique contribution of our field to modern society.
