SOUND AT NISSAN - sound art as a tool in urban development process

Harp Art Lab will produce a new sound art project in the city of Halmstad, Sweden, in 2016. International artists and inhabitants will be invited to cooperate in a series of sound walks, workshops and installations along Nissan, the river that runs through Halmstad. The project aims at applying Harp Innovation Model in a municipal urban development project - Tullkammarkajen - in Halmstad.

Sound at Nissan
A new residential area called Tullkammarkajen is planned to develop over the coming years. The area will consist of a mixed development in its content, predominantly residential residences (600 units) and it will be the "future portal to Halmstad by the water." In the project the Harp Innovation Model will be tested for the first time in an urban environment along the river Nissan in Halmstad. The method was developed by Harp Art Lab and is based on a socially engaged and discursive sound art practice. 

Workshops
The goal is to use sound art as tool in this specific urban development project through a series of sound walks, workshops and sound installations. The project will take place 2016 in collaboration with the residents of Halmstad, artists, entrepreneurs, architects, urban planners and politicians.

Mapping
A series of sound walks will take place along the entire strip of the river Nissan. From the harbor, passing by Tullkammarkajen and all the way up to Slottsmöllan, in order to map the entire cultural setting along Nissan. The information is processed and analyzed through a series of follow-up workshops where sound maps, recordings and personal experiences, noise studies and historical data is compiled.

Cooperation
By involving local communities and other parties interested in the processes, new and challenging questions and opinions will be raised. Such as cooperation and new urban housing, thus contributing in giving local decision makers valuable insights through democratic processes. The start of the construction of the residential area is set to 2020, giving the project the opportunity to contribute to development of the new area.

Manifestation
The project is manifested along Nissan and Tullkammarkajen with sound installations, film, performances and mobile sound devices. 

Documentation
The work processes will be documented in order to spread knowledge of the project as well as a way to export the working method to other locations where sound art can be used as a tool in the development of urban environments.

Harp Art Lab
Harp Art Lab is the initiating force of the project. Harp Art Lab is a laboratory for sound and environmental art based in Harplinge windmill, a few kilometers north of Halmstad on the Swedish west coast. Harp Art Lab has since 2010 conducted over 60 international art projects. The motivations behind the work of Harp Art Lab are predominantly environmental, political, and social. One of the main goals is to re-mediate contested territories in a scientific and creative way to the public.

Harp Innovation Model
The experience gained from past projects has been developed into an innovation model - Harp Innovation Model - based on a socially engaged and discursive sound art practice with a focus on sustainability and innovation by pioneering cultural expressions.
