HiLight Brings Light to 900 Families in India

During 2012-2013, Synergy Facilities Ltd, based in India, has teamed up with HiNation to provide HiLight to 900 families in India in Project HiLight India. The project focuses on 4 states where access to electricity is low, and poverty levels are high: Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal and Orissa. As an example, 95% of the population in Bihar use kerosene for light.

Do you think kerosene lamps are cosy? :-) Let's look at some facts:

  • Life comes to a standstill after dark, as kerosene lamps give very low visibility. Using kerosene for light is actually one of the MOST energy inefficient ways of creating light, as most energy turns into heat.
  • Smoke from kerosene lamps are responsible for respiratory infections, lung and throat cancer, serious eye infections, cataracts as well as low birth weight
  • Acute respiratory infections like influenza and pneumonia kill nearly 2 million children in developing nations each year. World Bank estimates that 780 million women and children breathing kerosene fumes inhale the equivalent of smoke from two packs of cigarettes a day.
  • Kerosene and candles cause countless fire catastrophes every year. In India, 2.5 million people (350,000 of them children) suffer severe burns each year, primarily due to overturned kerosene lamps.
  • 2.2 billion litres of kerosene is burnt each year in India for lighting, equivalent to ~5.5 million tons CO2 emitted to the atmosphere - every year!

Project HiLight India is partly financed by programme Demo Environment, organized by Swedish Agency for Economic and Regional Growth and financed by SIDA. The project promotes sustainable growth and environmental technologies that contribute to improved living conditions for people in seven partner countries, among them India.

In a few days, the team will also launch Christmas gift cards providing HiLights to more families in need - the perfect gift for someone who already have got access to power!

New Finding: HiLight Gives 30% Increase in Fish Production

During our recent visit to some of our projects in Kenya, we came across new ways of using HiLight to increase agriculture productivity and improve income levels. One of our customers uses HiLight for his fish ponds - and within 6 months, they report an increased production of over 30% in their fish ponds! For our customer, this equals an additional income 3.500 USD/year!
In some areas, increasing the use of fish in the local food culture would also heavily increase access to protein, improving nutrition and health of the people in the area.

Feel free to contact us on info@hination.se if you want to know more about how to improve productivity using HiLight in the agriculture industry!

Maximizing Milk...

HiNation is currently engaged in a project supporting milk farmers in rural areas of Africa to increase the productivity of their cows. Our main goal is to make sure more milk reach dairies in fresh & hygienic state; both earning a higher income to farmers as well as providing more milk, cheaper, to the community.

Currently, a very high share of the small-scale farmer milk is destroyed due to lack of cooling chains, kerosene contamination and difficulties to properly clean the used containers. HiLight will now be used by farmers to improve their milk production efficiency. More details to come!

HiNation® was founded in 2008 by Linda Krondahl, M.Sc. Chemical Engineering and Technology Management. HiNation cooperates with external expertise, organisations and universities for product development, manufacturing and sales. Our mission is to provide the best solar powered products to people around the globe, focusing on two markets - Outdoor users www.hination.com and Off-grid users www.hination.org.

Today 1,7 billion people, about 25% of the world's population, lack access to electricity. Instead, they get light from open fires, kerosene lamps or battery flash lights. The result is unhealthy emissions, affecting the health of people locally and the environment globally, but also the risk related to fires in areas where water often is a scarce resource. With HiNation's portable solar panel HiLight they can produce their own energy for durable lighting and charging cell phones and other portable device.
