HiNation Newsletter - Mar 2013: Heading for Nairobi, Gaborone & Dar es Salaam

** Can HiLight Increase Chicken & Egg Production in Zambia?

As we are currently celebrating Eastern here in Sweden, what could be better news: The Royal Academy of Veterinary (SLU) in Uppsala, Sweden, recently approved 2 final years students to execute an MFS, Minor Field Study in Zambia. The aim is to explore HiLight's importance in providing light for chicken production. With more hours of light, prolonging the usual 12 hours of daylight, chickens are expected to eat more,  which should increase efficiency in production. Tests will also be done to verify the effect of the light in egg production.

In a collaboration with the GART Institute in Choma, the team is also going to verify whether milking of cows when it is still dark, during cool hours, will improve the quantity of milk arriving fresh at the dairy. Current reports indicate that today, up to 70-80 % of small scale farmer milk is destroyed at arrival at the dairy; a major loss both in income and nutrition value.

** HiNation in Nairobi, Gaborone and Dar es Salaam

Soon, we pack our bags for a trip around East and South East Africa. During April and May, we will meet with friends and partners to initiate new co-operations and take some projects to the next level. Some of the planned activities:* Take the next steps in the Demo Environment project with a local partner in Gaborone, Botswana.* Participate in the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs delegation to Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.* Discuss potential co-operations with the milk & dairy industry in Nairobi, Kenya.

Are you in the area and want to meet us? Feel free to contact Linda Krondahl (linda.krondahl@hination.se) to see if we can make our paths cross!

** HiLight User Guide available in Swahili!

As a result of the growing interest from Eastern Africa, we have recently released the HiLight User Guide in Swahili, to complement the earlier versions in English, French and German. You can find the full PDF here.

HiNation® was founded in 2008 by Linda Krondahl, M.Sc. Chemical Engineering and Technology Management. HiNation cooperates with external expertise, organisations and universities for product development, manufacturing and sales. Our mission is to provide the best solar powered products to people around the globe, focusing on two markets - Outdoor users www.hination.com and Off-grid users www.hination.org.

Today 1,7 billion people, about 25% of the world's population, lack access to electricity. Instead, they get light from open fires, kerosene lamps or battery flash lights. The result is unhealthy emissions, affecting the health of people locally and the environment globally, but also the risk related to fires in areas where water often is a scarce resource. With HiNation's portable solar panel HiLight they can produce their own energy for durable lighting and charging cell phones and other portable device.
