Disabled children celebrate the anniversary of the Bhopal disaster

The 28th anniversary of the catastrophy in Bhopal, India, when 500,000 people were exposed to toxic gases, is celebrated during several days.

First were the disabled children of Chingari Trust, a habilitation centre for the children and grandchildren to the victims as well as for those living in the area where they drink the polluted water. They performed a silent sit-in in one of the most traficated road crossings. Candles, signs and all the children in weelchairs caused great attentiong from bypassers and media.

The children have different injuries: Down's syndrome, cerebral paresis (CP) and other neurological and metabolic syndromes. Some are little damaged, others seriously.

- These children have probably to great extent been kept hidden berfore the Chingari Trust started, sais Dr Ingrid Eckerman, the doctor that is banned by the Government of India. It is fantastic to see the pride of the mothers when the children progress and can take part in social activities. I used to go here and play my violin, which was vere appreciated. That someone from far-away bothers to come there to say hullo to mothers and children gives them acknowledgment. But as a general practitioner it is difficult to something. A physical therapeut with experince from habilitation would be of more use.

Stoppa utvisningarna till Afghanistan! Stop deportations to Afghanistan!
